5 Langscape = language + landscape Other examples: soundscape, cityscape, dreamscape, artscape Langscape - the language of public road signs, advertising billboards, street names, place names, commercial shop signs, and public signs on government buildings combines to form the linguistic landscape of a given territory, region, or urban agglomeration (Landry & Bourhis,1997:25).

6 We are serious!!!! Due Date: Oct 25, 2008 Mark penalty will be imposed on late submission (departmental policy) Late assignments will be given a lower grade. Assignments more than 7 days late will be given the ‘F’ grade. Individual course coordinators will decide how mark deduction is calculated for assignments between 1 and 7 days late. Course coordinator will check your online submission at 8 a.m., Oct 26.

7 Your team should… leisurely stroll into your chosen district to discover the language use (all languages, all modes) in your chosen district; diligently record (any mode) the language use your team discovered; chat with people in your chosen district on their views about language use (you can use ‘Hi5’ from BC Magazine as an example); critically review the language use (all languages, all modes) in your chosen district; carefully select your presentation materials (only original works will be assessed); and creatively present your findings.

8 Administrative team effort – this is a collaborative writing assignment. It is expected that the writing submitted for this assignment will read like it is written by the collective mind of one group, rather than by 3/4/5 individual writers contributing one paragraph each; assessment – please refer to the assessment rubric for details. Everyone in the same group will receive the same mark for this assignment; word limit – about 2500 for a group of 4; editorial effort – your team needs to submit a piece of readily presentable writing; citations – APA referencing to 2 academic works (book chapter or journal article published in academic journal); and copyright – if you plan to use copyright works (photo, graphic, visual, audio and text), please seek permission before assignment submission (you will be required to submit written evidence).
