A Vision for the Gloucestershire Countryside

CPRE does not share the pervasive pessimism The Gloucestershire countryside can be more accessible for all, more viable and even more beautiful This is our vision for Gloucestershire in 2026, our centenary year... CPRE’s view

Changing attitudes 1 Changing attitudes Good buildings will enhance local distinctiveness A new focus on quality of life - good buildings which fit their place, green well kept countryside - more tranquil for all of us to enjoy
4
Changing attitudes 2 Changing attitudes Litter and fly-tipping will no longer be tolerated Both rural and urban communities will value countryside Gloucestershire people will live much greener lives A new focus on quality of life - good buildings which fit their place, open countryside well- kept, more tranquil for all to enjoy

Changing attitudes 3 Changing attitudes Most of Gloucestershire will remain open and green: less than 2% will have been lost to development in 20 years Rural sports will be enjoyed by all, and will support local employment and the rural economy. A new focus on quality of life - good buildings which fit their place, open countryside well- kept, more tranquil for all to enjoy
6
Better planning 1 Better planning for Gloucestershire Urban regeneration through redeveloping brownfield land and greening of towns and cities will protect our countryside More than 40,000 well-designed homes will have been created since 2009, with many old buildings renovated Renaissance of urban areas will make a crucial contribution to safeguarding the Gloucestershire countryside
7
Better planning 2 Better planning for Gloucestershire Green Belt will also help safeguard the countryside - more attractive and accessible, it will reinvigorate towns and cities Green Belt will be extended south of Gloucester and north of Cheltenham (holding back urban sprawl like this) More democratic planning will promote sustainable development as well as the County’s local economy.
8
New life in our countryside 1 More people will work and live in the Gloucestershire countryside by 2026 and visit it for pleasure With ability to work from home and improved access to local services, most people will not have to travel far daily They will walk and cycle more, in town and country Rural communities will be stronger and more diverse New life in our Countryside
9
New life in our countryside 2 More people will work and live in the Gloucestershire countryside by 2026 and visit it for pleasure Many villages will grow, but most of the new houses will be affordable - and will be kept that way in perpetuity Children will be encouraged to enjoy the countryside - they will climb trees, play conkers and get their knees dirty. New life in our Countryside
10
Local food, viable farming 1 Gloucestershire farmers will do well in conserving the beautiful patchwork of landscape, and will prosper High quality agricultural land in Gloucestershire will be better protected from development By 2026 we will eat more local food produced in the County. People will walk more and be healthier Local food, viable farming and wildlife
11
Local food, viable farming 2 Improved farming methods will boost food production with less need for artificial fertilisers, protecting nature Many more adults and children will visit the countryside and will see more animals outdoors Many wildflowers, birds, insects and mammals that have dwindled over the previous 70 years will return. Local food, viable farming and wildlife
12
Changing landscapes Farmland will still dominate the countryside. Some land will be wetter than before, helping wildlife Woodland, landscape and the rural economy in the Forest of Dean will be enhanced by granting AONB status Against a background of climate change, by 2026 the land will be better managed to prevent flooding. Changing landscapes
13
Renewable energy Rural buildings will be more energy efficient and small scale renewables will be common Renewable energy developments of all kinds will be sensitive to the character of our County’s landscape One of the less damaging Severn tidal power schemes will guard against rising sea levels and protect wildlife. Renewable energy in Gloucestershire

Achieving CPRE’s vision We will make and implement realistic plans of action to achieve - with our partners - CPRE’s visionary aims for the countryside. By 2026 the countryside will be valued and enjoyed by all as a huge national asset - but the public, and the government, must be convinced we need to take action Our 2009 Annual Report shows some good progress made with CPRE Glos work towards achieving this vision. Achieving CPRE’s vision
