1. HOW IT BEGAN A. During the cold war there was a space race. B. This was a period technological advancement on both sides (USA & USSR) C. 1957- Soviet Satellite Sputnik D. 1969- U.S. Moon Landing

2. THE ISS A. In 1998, putting aside their differences, Russia and United States worked together with 14 other countries to launch the International Space Station. B. The ISS is a research platform, used to conduct various experiments in 0- gravity and in space.

3. OTHER ADVANCES A. In the 1950s, television beat radio to become the main source for news. B. Access to television (and pictures) has increased empathy and understanding for events within the country (such as civil rights) and those far away (such as the Vietnam war).

4. IMPACT OF SATELLITES A. Satellites are used to increase world-wide communication. B. Events occurring in a far away location can be broadcast globally in an instant.

5. COMPUTERS A. Beginning in the Early 1950s, computers were the size of rooms and difficult to use. B. Today, your cell phone has thousands of times more power than the computers used on the first space shuttle. C. Computers are used to run assembly lines, power modern appliances, and assist in business operations.

6. THE INTERNET A. The internet further connected businesses, schools and individuals. B. The internet is the connection of computer networks around the world, and exploded in usage between 1995 and 2002. C. The internet allows large amounts of information to be transferred to individuals over long distances a. This transfer allows people to work from home, send information to remote locations, etc.

INTERNET UNDERSEA CABLE This cable is what connects all the countries of the world to each other. Those few wires in the middle carry all of the bandwidth of thousands of requests every second.
