MEMORIZING STRATEGIES

CHUNKING Chunking is a way of memorizing information which is by breaking it up into small chunks. We may not realise this but we often use this method on a daily basis. We normally use it when we memorize our friend`s telephone number, our identification card number and also our passwords. It is easy to remember long informations when you chunk them because a normal human can only remember 3 – 5 bits of information at a time.

Examples of Chunking Telephone number 012 – 3456 789 Words jo – ker co - met

UNDERSTANDING Before you try to memorize something try understanding it first. A good way to do this is by making a connection between what you have learned and what you have experienced. The better you can relate the new information to what you already know, the easier it is to learn. For example, before attempting to memorize events of history, find the places on a globe (or world map) and see where they are relative to one another and also relative to where you live.

GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS Content materials present text which is to dense for teaching. Therefore, teaching students to use graphic organizers such as webs, Venn diagrams, and charts to help them better in comprehending the texts which can promote teachers instruction and students learning. Examples of graphic organizers : - Venn diagram.

Web diagram. The cause and effect diagram. Circle organizers.

VISUALIZATION To visualize means to see an image in our head without even looking at it. Visualization can help you learn almost anything. For an example, lets say the topic is the water cycle.

ASSOCIATION Another learning strategy is to associate each word or event with a person, place, thing, feeling or situation. You may connect what you are learning with someone you know, with a movie character or a scene from a particular movie. When you learn vocabulary words just write the new word, write the definitions next to them, and then write any strong association to help you remember the meaning of each word. For an example : I was flabbergasted to see a crime scene happening in front of me.

RHYMING Rhyming was a method we all loved during our pre – school days where we use to rhyme the ABC song to learn the alphabets. This was also a good strategy when we learn the time tables. For an example, 7 boys and 7 girls went down the hill to get a bucket of 49 eggs. Example of rhyming : - a)First, memorize key words that can be associated with numbers.example: bun = one; shoe = two, tree = three, door = four, hive = five, etc. Create an image of the items you need to remember with key words. b) Four basic food groups-- diary products; meat, fish, and poultry; grains; and fruit and vegetables c) Think of cheese on a bun (one), livestock with shoes on (two), a sack of grain suspended in a tree (three), a door to a room stocked with fruits and vegetables (four)

TALKING This is a strategy which is easy and fun to use especially if you are a talkative person. It is so simple, you just have to go around telling your grandparents, your parents, friend or even your pet about what u have learned. It doesn't matter if others know what you are saying; you do, so you'll learn.

STORYTELLING Storytelling is a great way to help you remember information in any subject. For an example, write down the key points of what you are learning and arranging them in a logical manner, after that u begin your story by using the key points in an interesting way so that the informations will be remained in your mind.

WRITING SENTENCES This is a method we use to remember for the notes we take down which is by creating silly sentences. This strategy can even help us learn those extra troublesome spelling words by just making up a sentence using words that begin with the letters. For an example : - "My Very Excellent Mom Just Served Us Nine Pizzas“ (Every alphabet that is capitalized represents a planet) Mecury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto

ACRONYMS An acronym is a word made up from the first letters of a list of words. Each of the letters in the word is meant to trigger your memory to help you remember an item. This is particularly useful when remembering words in a specified order. Examples of acronyms : - Remember the acrostic for the order of the colours of the rainbow. “Red Of York Gains Better In Vain”

Other examples include: NBA (National Basketball Associations), BPL (Barclays Premier League) WWF (World Wide Fund)

REHEARSING When you want to remember information, you have to practice it, or else it fades. So, just as actors need to rehearse in order to remember their lines, students need to rehearse to remember what they are learning. These are the tips of rehearsing : - a) Rehearse for short practice periods (perhaps 30 to 60 minutes) b)Use a multisensory approach every time you rehearse: say it, write it, read it, draw it, sing it – do whatever it takes. c)Just before going to sleep, review everything you will need to know for the next day or for the upcoming test. d) Review in the morning while brushing your teeth, eating breakfast or on the way to class.

PLAYING GAMES Playing games is a great way to memorize information. You see, as you play the game you are learning the material and practicing it over and over again. Games can help you remember facts, formulas, definitions, events or any other information you're trying to learn.

Here is an example : - a)Play Memory, alone or with others, using decks of cards you make from ordinary index cards you cut in half. b) Create pairs by writing the same number on each of two cards, 1 and 1, 2 and 2, etc. Write the numbers tiny so they will not interfere with play. c)On each pair, write a question on one card and the answer on the other card. For example, "2x7=" is on one card and "14" is on its pair, or "Where did the Pilgrims land?" is on one card and the other one is on its pair. d)Then shuffle all the cards and play Memory with yourself or with a friend. If you're alone, see how fast you can match up all the pairs. e) You'll be able to check yourself by making sure the small numbers are the same. HAVE FUN LEARNING !!
