Problem The highest elevation in North America is Mt. McKinley, which is 20,320 feet above sea level. The lowest elevation is Death Valley, which is 282 feet below sea level. What is the distance from the top of Mt. McKinley to the bottom of Death Valley?

Name the opposite of the given words. 1. Hot 2. Open 3. Above 4. Plus 5. Positive

INTEGERS Define integers, absolute value, and opposites. Integers are the whole numbers and their opposites. The absolute value of a number is its distance from 0 on a number line. Two numbers that are the same distance from 0 on a number line are opposites.

The number line goes on forever in both directions. This is indicated by the arrows. Whole numbers greater than zero are called positive integers. These numbers are to the right of zero on the number line. Whole numbers less than zero are called negative integers. These numbers are to the left of zero on the number line. The integer zero is neutral. It is neither positive nor negative. The sign of an integer is either positive ( + ) or negative ( - ), except zero, which has no sign. Two integers are opposites if they are each the same distance away from zero, but on opposite sides of the number line. One will have a positive sign, the other a negative sign. In the number line above, + 3 and - 3 are labeled as opposites.

Write an integer to describe each situation. 8 steps backwards ________ Gained 32 yards ________ Deposit of $250 ________ 8 degrees below zero ________ 1000 feet below sea level ________

Looking at numbers on a vertical number line can be useful.

Zero is neither positive or negative Which is greater, -5 or -3? Locate both numbers on the number line. Numbers to the right are greater. -3 is to the right of -5 so -3 is greater. Examples of Comparing Integers

Put the following numbers in order starting with the least. -23, 17, -32, 2, -4, 0 Start looking at the negative numbers as these are always less than positive numbers. Start with the "biggest" negative number ( -32) as that has the lowest value. Find the next "biggest" negative number (-23) and continue until the negative numbers are in order. Zero and positive numbers can then be put into order to give the following complete list: -32, -23, -4, 0, 2, 17

Exit Ticket 1. What is an integer? 2. Is.5 an integer? 3. What is the opposite of -100? 4. What can you tell me about negative integers in respect to its distance from 0 on a number line? 5. The absolute value of a number is always what kind of number? 6. What is │ -12 │ ?

Exit Ticket 1. What is an integer? The whole numbers and their opposites. 2. Is.5 an integer? No, because it is not a whole number. 3. What is the opposite of -100? 100 4. What can you tell me about negative integers in respect of its distance from 0 on a number line? Further left, the smaller it gets. 5. The absolute value of a number is always what kind of number? Positive 6. What is │ -12 │ ? 12 7. What is │ 12 │ ? 12
