Lesson 2.1

Vertices and Intercepts of parabolas

The vertex of a parabola is its min or max point The intercepts of a parabola are where the graph intersects the x and y axes

To find the vertex of a parabola If the equation is written in standard form… Y=ax2+bx+c ►M►M►M►Make x = -b/2a ►U►U►U►Use the x value to solve for y or f(x) ►W►W►W►Write answer as an ordered pair If the equation is written in vertex form ►Y►Y►Y►Y=(x-a)2+b the vertex is (a,b)

Find the vertex of these functions ► F(x) = 2x 2 + 4x + 2

F(x) = x 2 – 7

(x) = (x – 6) 2 + 3

To find the x-intercept of a parabola ► Set the function equal to zero and solve for all real zeros of x ► Note that there may be up to two x- intercepts or as few as none ► Answer should be in the form of (x, 0)

To find the y-intercept of a parabola ►S►S►S►Substitute 0 in for x and evaluate ►T►T►T►There will only be one answer ►A►A►A►Answer should be in the form of (0, y)

Find the x and y intercepts ► F(x) = x 2 – 6x + 8

F(x) = x 2 + 8x - 30
