3 ADVOCACY IS DEFINED AS: ACTIVE SUPPORT, ESPECIALLY OF A CAUSE.

4 ADVOCACY CAN ALSO BE DEFINED AS: to write, speak, act in favor of, or support of.

5 ADVOCACY WORK IS USUALLY DONE Civil Sector, Non-Profit, or Volunteer

6 “COMMON GOOD” Individual citizens having the commitment & motivation to promote the welfare of the community (even sacrificing their own time, personal preference, or money) to work together with others for the greater benefit of all

7 CAUSES: Pollution Dog Fighting Steroid Use in Athletes Endangered Species Development Domestic Violence Relay for Life

8 ADVOCATE

9 ADVOCATE IS DEFINED AS: 1) TO SUPPORT OR RECOMMEND PUBLICLY; PLEAD FOR OR SPEAK IN FAVOR OF; 2) A PERSON WHO UPHOLDS OR DEFENDS A CAUSE; SUPPORTER; 3) A PERSON WHO INTERCEDES ON BEHALF OF ANOTHER.

10 Individuals can become advocates on behalf of many causes. Some examples include legislative, child, consumer, health, lobbying and environmental advocacy.

11 Each student will be driven to advocate for different areas depending upon: one’s beliefs, values and knowledge.

12 Once an individual has a belief or a cause to support, there are characteristics that the individual demonstrates in being an effective advocate.

13 Fact Finders: They thoroughly research issues and try to deal objectively with their own related prejudices and preferences.

14 Individualists: They avoid getting caught up in group thinking and make their own decisions based on the information. They are polite but committed.

15 Good Listeners: They hear what others are saying and communicate their understanding of what is being said and felt.

16 People who Persevere: They are determined advocates. They are polite while remaining firmly committed to the cause.

17 Reasonable: They understand the limitations of time, talent, and treasure and use good judgment when faced with these limitations.

18 Credible: They understand the need for being trustworthy, honest, and sensitive to all involved.

19 Passionate: They feel deeply about their cause and are willing not only speak to others about it, but they are also willing to act to promote it.

20 Communicators: They are able to clearly and persuasively articulate their point of view.

25 It’s DEFINITELY easier to be an ADVOCATE for someone or something!
