What do you think the topic of this lesson could be?
2
What Goes Around Comes Around How does the heart work and what can we do if it goes wrong? Task 1: You are going to read a scientific article about todays lesson subject. With the person next to you, use your prior knowledge to make a list of as many key words as you can, that could come up in the article.
3
Lets see how many you managed to get right! Read the article and underline any key words. Highlight or underline anything you think is important.

The Heart

The heart – a double pump The right hand side The left hand side http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesi ze/science/21c/disease/heartdiseaserev3.shtml

Lets Investigate
7
Blood passes through heart TWICE per complete circuit Double Circulation Heart is composed of two separate pumps – right side pumps blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen The left side pumps oxygenated blood rapidly and at high pressure to the body
8
Right hand Side 1. Deoxygenated blood is pumped from the heart to the lungs. Left hand Side 2. The blood receives oxygen and is pumped back to the heart. 4. The oxygen leaves the blood to be used for respiration in the body and the blood carrying CO 2 goes back to the heart. 3. The oxygenated blood is then pumped to the rest of the body.
9
Task: turn this information into a flow diagram. Start: deoxygenated blood enters the right atrium of the heart, from the body. C: Deoxygenated blood moves into the right ventricle. A: Deoxygenated blood is pumped from the right ventricle to the lungs. B Oxygenated blood enters the left hand atrium. D: Oxygenated blood enters the left hand ventricle and is pumped around the body under high pressure..
