Childhood ▪Born in New Orleans. Birthplace of Jazz! ▪Raised by his mom and grandma. ▪Wanted to help his mom make money. – Sold newspapers and hauled coal as little boy

Love of Music ▪Age 11 – dropped out of school to sing on street corners. ▪Met a band director and learned to play the cornet. ▪Spent his free time listening to local bands and performing! ▪Met “King” Oliver – Cornet expert – Taught Louis to play better.

Traveling the United States ▪Spent 3 years performing on steamboats on the Mississippi River ▪Joined “King” Oliver’s band in Chicago in 1922. ▪Moved to New York in 1924 and began his solo career. ▪Switched to the trumpet. ▪Nobody could play Louis! – Energetic and creative!

The Great Satchmo - King of Jazz Most famous jazz musician of the 20 th century! Invented “scat” singing. - Singing melody on nonsense syllables. Expert singer, trumpeter, improviser.

Childhood ▪Born in Newport News, Virginia ▪Orphaned when she was a little girl. ▪Moved to an orphanage in New York ▪Very shy, but loved to sing and dance!

Talent Competition ▪Age 17 – entered a talent competition. ▪Was going to dance, but got too nervous. – She decided to sing instead. ▪Won the whole competition! ▪Lots of people hired her to sing with their bands!

Ella Fitzgerald – The First Lady of Song ▪Called the Queen of Jazz. ▪Recorded music for almost 60 years! ▪Known for scatting in her singing.
