4. Love of Music ▪Age 11 – dropped out of school to sing on street corners. ▪Met a band director and learned to play the cornet. ▪Spent his free time listening to local bands and performing! ▪Met “King” Oliver – Cornet expert – Taught Louis to play better.

6. Traveling the United States ▪Spent 3 years performing on steamboats on the Mississippi River ▪Joined “King” Oliver’s band in Chicago in 1922. ▪Moved to New York in 1924 and began his solo career. ▪Switched to the trumpet. ▪Nobody could play Louis! – Energetic and creative!

7. The Great Satchmo - King of Jazz  Most famous jazz musician of the 20 th century!  Invented “scat” singing. - Singing melody on nonsense syllables.  Expert singer, trumpeter, improviser.

11. Talent Competition ▪Age 17 – entered a talent competition. ▪Was going to dance, but got too nervous. – She decided to sing instead. ▪Won the whole competition! ▪Lots of people hired her to sing with their bands!
