Catalyst 3/18/14 On your Catalyst Sheet, please answer the following question: 1.What is collision theory? How does this theory explain reaction rates? When you are done, raise your hand quietly for a stamp.

Today’s Learning Targets LT 8.3 – I can explain what the activation energy of a reaction is. I can identify it on a reaction coordinate and explain how it influences the rate of a reaction. LT 8.4 – I can define what a catalyst is and explain how it is related to the rate of chemical reaction. I can explain how a catalyst is related to a reactions activation energy.
6
Today’s Focus Question How could we speed up the rate at which McDonald’s French Fries decompose?
7
LECTURE 8.3 – CATALYSTS, ACTIVATION ENERGY, AND REACTION COORDINATES
8
What are reaction coordinates?
9
I. Reaction Coordinate We can graph the energy that is associated with a reaction using a reaction coordinate. Reactants Products
10
II. Activation Energy Reactions require a certain amount of energy in order to proceed. Activation Energy – The amount of energy required to get the reaction to go to completion.
11
Reactants Products Activation Energy
12
Quick Jot Which diagram has a lower activation energy?
13
What are catalysts?
14
I. Catalyst A catalyst is substance that speeds up the rate of reaction by lowering the activation energy. Catalysts are never used up in the reaction. E a with catalyst E a without catalyst

Frayer Vocab
16
Frayer Example
17
Vocabulary Practice Complete the Frayer boxes for the following words: – Rate – Collision Theory – Activation Energy – Catalyst – Reaction Coordinate
18
(Safe, Non-Violent) Paper Fight! RULES – Try to get as many paper balls on the other side of the room – Soft underhand throws ONLY! (overhand or hard throws will get you kicked out) – Do not aim at people – STOP throwing after time is up – Do NOT make new paper balls – Collect and count paper balls on your side
19
Justify – TPS Why did both sides of the room have equal numbers of colors as the fight went on?
20
LECTURE 8.4 – EQUILIBRIUM
21
Today’s Learning Targets LT 8.5 – I can describe what equilibrium is and relate it to rates of the forward and reverse reactions.
22
What is equilibrium?
23
I. Equilibrium Reactions can go in both directions Equilibrium –When the rate of forward reaction equals the rate of the reverse reaction. Therefore, during the reaction, the concentrations of products and reactants do not change.
24
II. Equilibrium Expression 2HgO (s) ⇌ 2Hg (l) + O 2 (g) Equilibrium Arrow
25
Video: Dynamic Equilibrium Explained
26
III. Dynamic Equilibrium Reactions do not stop at equilibrium. Dynamic equilibrium occurs when the reaction is still occurring while in equilibrium. The rate of forward and reverse reaction are the same.
28
Reaction & Equilibrium Brochures Fold your paper in half, title left side “Reaction Coordinates” and right side “Equilibrium” Create a brochure explaining the concepts of reaction coordinates and equilibriums Include definitions, diagrams, and explanations of diagrams for full credit
29
Exit Slip 1.Label reactants, products, & activation energy on the reaction coordinate 2. On the reaction coordinate, draw a dashed line to represent how a catalyst would impact the reaction. 3. During equilibrium, the rate of __________ equals the rate of __________.
