Certified Production Technician Program

The Certified Production Technician certification addresses the core technical competencies of higher skilled production workers in all sectors of manufacturing. There are four core competencies and one optional competency that individuals are tested. Will result in a nationally recognized, portable credential

Mo Manufacturing WINs This Department of Labor grant, MoManufacturingWINs allows East Central College to offer short-term, flexible training at no tuition cost to eligible students interested in improving their skill level in modern manufacturing.

How does the program work? Individual completes MoManWINs application Once accepted, attends a one- day (or two half-days) seminar known as “Transitions.” Will take the NCRC (WorkKeys) assessment

Applying to the CPT program MoManWINs  Fill out an East Central College application.  Complete a MoManWINs application.  Will need copies of high school transcripts.  Usually notified of acceptance within a week or so. We have individuals who can help with each step in the application process.

Transitions This “portal” is designed mainly for those who have never attended college or are employed full time. Participants will:  Earn their National Career Readiness Certificate and learn how those scores can be used  Receive an overview of local manufacturing industry and discuss career paths  Learn critical skills to aid in college and career success.  Transitions are offered monthly – usually 8:00 am - 3:00 pm on a Saturday, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm for a two-day session, or 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm over two evenings.

NCRC (also known as the WorkKeys assessment) ACT's National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) is a portable credential that demonstrates achievement and a certain level of workplace employability skills in the following three areas: Applied Mathematics Locating Information Reading for Information NCRC PLUS – (soft skills) Work Discipline: Productivity and dependability Teamwork: Tolerance, communication, and attitude Customer Service Orientation: Interpersonal skills and perseverance Managerial Potential: Persuasion, enthusiasm, and problem solving

 Each of the tests is multiple choice and takes about an hour.  Can take all the tests at once, or space them out.  Scores are can be used as a guideline for readiness for certain careers or jobs. “Profiling”

Why the Certified Production Technician program was developed  Skills gap. Average age of today’s workforce is 54. Stigma has limited entry of younger ageset into advanced manufacturing.  Constantly advancing technology  Creates a relationship between manufacturers and high schools & colleges.

About the MSSC  The Manufacturing Skill Standards Council is the certifying body for the CPT award  The MSSC is nationwide, industry-defined and federally endorsed  The standards were developed by more than 350 educators and manufacturers working together -Focus on specific skills needed in ALL segments of industry -CPT’s modules drill down to specific competencies -Assures that the applicant has been exposed to basic manufacturing competencies and is interested a manufacturing career

MSSC partners

Value of a CPT certification to workers and students  Offer the only national, industry recognized core skill certification for production workers.  Improves career advancement opportunities and earnings by obtaining high-performance skills.  Improves job security through certification of proven skill sets.  Credentials skills and competencies needed to be an easily trainable, flexible worker able to keep pace with technological changes.

Value to CPT certification to employers  Offers a pipeline of skilled workers by embedding certification training in schools  Decreased recruitment costs by providing job candidates with industry recognized credentials  Elimination of remedial training costs by providing well prepared workers  A diagnostic tool to benchmark incumbent workers against a high-performance national standard  Serves to attract, motivate and retain qualified employees

Nuts & bolts of the CPT program Allows students to be trained, assessed and certified in the core technical competencies of higher skilled production workers in all sectors on manufacturing.  Non-credit program  Online  Self-paced

Safety Quality & Continuous Improvement Manufacturing Process & Production Maintenance AwarenessOptional: Green Production

Work in a safe and productive manufacturing workplace Perform safety and environmental inspections Perform emergency drills and participate in emergency teams Identify unsafe conditions and take corrective action Provide safety orientation for all employees Train personnel to use equipment safely Suggest processes and procedures that support safety of work environment Fulfill safety and health requirements for maintenance, installation, and repair Monitor safe equipment and operator performance Utilize effective, safety-enhancing workplace practicesSafetySafety

Participate in periodic internal quality audit activities Check calibration of gages and other data collection equipment Suggest continuous improvements Inspect materials and product/process at all stages Document the results of quality tests Communicate quality problems. Take corrective actions to restore or maintain quality Identify fundamentals of blueprint reading Use common measurement systems and precision measurement tools Record process outcomes and trendsQualityQuality

Identify customer needs Determine resources available for the production process Set team production goals Make job assignments Coordinate work flow with team members and other work groups Communicate production and material requirements and product specifications Perform and monitor the process to make the product Document product and process compliance with customer Prepare final product for shipping or distribution

Perform preventive maintenance and routine repair Monitor indicators to ensure correct operations Perform all housekeeping to maintain production schedule Recognize potential maintenance issues with basic production systems, including knowledge of when to inform maintenance personnel about problems with electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems as well as machine automation systems

Texts can be checked out at no charge to students Online assignments and study guides on Moodle Possible lab/review time Testing Tests will be offered at ECC’s Washington campus each week. Possibility of testing at job site if there are enough computers. Need about 75% to pass Average 80 multiple choice questions Allowed 90 minutes to finish
