CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Starter activity LO5 Understand holistic child development [AC 5.1] Time: 15 mins Can you multi-task? Consider: Can you watch the TV whilst studying? Can you text one person while talking to someone else? Can you talk on the phone while making something in the kitchen? Can you deal with two problems at the same time? Do you prefer to focus on one thing at a time? © Hodder & Stoughton Limited

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator How areas of development are interdependent Key terms: Interdependent – depending on each other. Holistic – looking at something as whole and not just in parts. Practitioners will plan to meet the holistic needs and development of a child. An activity or experience may be focused on one specific area of development but every other area will be necessary to complete the activity. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO5 Understand holistic child development [AC 5.1]
5
CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Pairs activity Time: 15 mins A group of 3 ½ year olds are sitting at a construction table playing with a set of interconnecting blocks. There are simple instructions for some basic models available. Describe each of the areas of development needed to complete this task. Describe how two areas of development are interdependent in this activity. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO5 Understand holistic child development [AC 5.1]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator How areas of development are interdependent Children will need to be given opportunities to work on all areas of development. Activities and experiences will be planned to meet individual needs and children will learn through trial and error, discovery and experiential learning. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO5 Understand holistic child development [AC 5.1]
7
CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator How areas of development are interdependent There are many examples of areas of development being dependent on other areas of development: A child will need to be able to communicate in order to express their emotions A child will need to be able to climb, crawl and jump in order to tackle the problem of an obstacle A child will need good fine motor skills to be able to start to mark make and then write. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO5 Understand holistic child development [AC 5.1]
8
CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Group activity Time: 15 mins Plan an activity that will show the interdependency of areas of development. Consider: The age and stage of the children Resources Areas of development Meeting individual needs The role of the practitioner. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO5 Understand holistic child development [AC 5.1]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator How areas of development are interdependent If a child has developmental delay then one area of development may affect others. A child who has limited communication skills may find it difficult to join in with other children and may find it hard to express their choices, feelings and emotions. It is the role of the practitioner to support this child to communicate so that their holistic development is not affected. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO5 Understand holistic child development [AC 5.1]
10
CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Classroom discussion activity Time: 15 mins Discuss the individual needs of a child who has a delay in one area of development. How does the setting support their holistic development? Consider: A child with mobility difficulties A child who has difficulty with their concentration and attention A child who cannot communicate with others A child who is very nervous and unhappy to be around others. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO5 Understand holistic child development [AC 5.1]
11
CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Reflection activity Time: 15 mins Reflecting on the Classroom discussion activity, consider: Do you support, stretch and challenge the holistic development of all children? If a child has a difficulty in one area of development, are you able to readily support the child? Can you think ‘outside the box’ and constantly look for opportunities to support holistic development? Why is it important to always be mindful of the holistic development of a child? © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO5 Understand holistic child development [AC 5.1]
12
CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator How areas of development are interdependent Practitioners will have a sound knowledge of child development and developmental milestones. They will observe children and identify any areas of development that may be delayed. Practitioners will work on a child’s strengths to support their areas for development. A child who struggles to sit still and concentrate can be encouraged to sit and sort their favourite toys such as cars or dinosaurs. This will support their cognitive development and their personal, social and emotional development. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO5 Understand holistic child development [AC 5.1]
13
CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Extension activity Time: 15 mins Create a leaflet to show a range of simple activities that will support a child’s holistic development. Consider: The age and stage of the children Resources Interdependency of areas of development Meeting individual needs The role of the practitioner. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO5 Understand holistic child development [AC 5.1]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator In this lesson we have learnt that: All areas of a child’s development are dependent on each other. A sound knowledge of child development will enable practitioners to support the holistic development of a child. Some children may need extra support in one or more areas of their development. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited
