Class Work: Algebra Discrete and Continuous Data You need your notes. Title the notes: Discrete and Continuous Data I will check your work at the end of class.

Discrete Data Discrete Data is a type of data that can be represented on a number line or graph with only Integers. Example: A 5 question quiz is given in a Math class. The number of correct answers on a student’s quiz is an example of discrete data. The number of correct answers would be: 0, 1, 2, 3, ….. If you put this on a number line, you would not include anything in between them for this data set.

Discrete Graphs Discrete Graph: a graph that consists of isolated points

Continuous Data Continuous data makes up the rest of the real world data types. This type is usually associated with some sort of measurement: height, temperature, … Ask yourself: Is it possible for the data to take on values that could be any fraction or decimal. Example: The length of time it takes for a light bulb to burn out. Could it take 80 hours? 80.7 hours? 80.789 hours?

Continuous Graphs Continuous Graph: a graph that is unbroken

Continuous or Discrete 1.The number of times it takes a person to pass a written exam to obtain a taxi license? 2.The height of trees at a nursery ? 3.The number of suitcases lost by an airline? y = 2x - 1 4.Domain: {x = 0, 1, 2, 3} 5.Domain: {x ≥ 0} discrete continuous discrete continuous

Class Work: Algebra Algebra book: pg. 224: 1 -9 7 – 9: the x values given are not the only possible x values (pay attention to the label for x) Identify as discrete or continuous: 10. # of suitcases lost by airline 11. Production of tomatoes by weight 12. Time it takes for a car battery to die 13.# of ears of corn produced 14. # green M&M’s in a bag
