“Building for life” Design and make a chair based on boats and their construction During my exam piece I had to do a lot of drawing which included a lot of sketches for my boats and chairs. Because of this my drawing skills improved from last year as before I felt I could only draw what I made with my imagination, but now I am able to copy what I have in front of me very well to. With my drawing skills I was able to get a clearer picture of what I wanted for my final piece.

Experimenting with shapes I cut and shaped polystyrene using sandpaper. This created a very solid shape which was inspired by some of the 1960’s furniture that I looked at.

Development of ideas I went through a long preparation with my ideas as I had really no idea what shape my final piece was going to be. I had looked at furniture designers to try get an idea for my final piece, and I had taken one of the ideas very far making mocks of it as well as a few other designs as mocks. I also had done two ideas pages to see what was used in furniture a lot and what I wanted on my final piece. I also researched a lot of different boat shapes and styles to try to get an idea for my final piece.

This technique of using wire was very useful as I could bend and create the desired shape. You can also see the bones of the boat. I started with the basic shape of a boat

When I got the idea of my final piece it was completely by accident as I had made the skeleton of a boat out of wire and then was bending it into different ideas, and then cut it in half and flipped it vertically which looked like a chair as you will see looking threw my preparation work. When I had the idea for my final piece I had to figure out if it was practical to make, one of the main problems I had was how to bend the wood, but then one of the school technicians said to use thin wood as it would bend easier. Their was a problem with this as it would be a children’s chair and it may get broke easily with such thin wood, but then we had the idea to use more than one layer of the wood.

Influence of artists/ practitioners Through all my work I had help from a few practitioners for example, I had help from the school technicians. They assisted me with my final piece as I did not know too much about how to bend wood and how to cut the wood. I also attended Doherty’s Furniture were I found out how to upholster my chair after I finished making the skeleton of my boat, they also showed me how their furniture is put together. There were many artists I studied threw my exam but their was one artist who I have based the fabric prints on my final piece on, the artist is Andre Deron. I used his work to inspire my final piece as of his bright bold strokes of colour he uses in his paintings.

What was your Brief? My brief was called “Building For Life”. So I have decided to build a chair for a child to link it to my brief name, the chair will be based on boats and the building of boats again to link into my brief. Did you meet your brief? I have met my brief very well, as my chair has finished better than I ever could have expected and it has linked in with my brief as much as I had hoped. Did you produce an effective final piece? It is very affective as it is the perfect size for a child and it is extremely durable which is a big positive as children are known for breaking things very easily. The colour is also very good as it links in with boats as it is the colours of the sea. I also added a storage unit as children will have a lot of spare toys to clean up. Calculate how much time, cost of final piece? I spent an estimate of 20 hours on my chair with researching and designing the final outcome. For price as it is a children’s chair it would have to be mass produced, which would mean in a shop it would cost about £30 but since this is a maquet it would cost more for my time and effort so for this it would cost £120. Did you use the most effective materials techniques and processes? I did not use the most affective materials and techniques as this is only a scale version of what the out come would be I would preferable of used plastic for the structure but could not in school. The fabric I used was cotton and that is also what I would use on the real version.
