 to hang out  This is a word Americans would use when talking to their friends. It’s not used when speaking with an older person or writing a letter.  to hang out = to spend time with friends For example:  A: I don’t have class during the next period. Do you want to hang out?  B: Sure! Let’s hang out.

 As you know, one good way to make a new friend is to do something together that you both enjoy.  This could be a hobby you share (like playing basketball or listening to music).  It could also be an activity friends often do together.  Here are some activities most Americans do with their friends.

 A mall = a large building with many different shops inside.  In America, you can find malls in almost every city.  Many American students your age like to go to malls with their friends to look at the shops, buy things or just hang out.

 Cinema = a public place where you can watch a movie  Every Friday, American cinemas show new movies. For this reason, many American students like to go to the cinema with their friends on the weekend to see those new movies.

 Many American students invite their friends to their home to watch TV, listen to music, dance or just hang out.  This is called a house party because it happens at someone’s home and not in a public place.  A house party = a party at someone’s home.  Be careful: There can be alcohol at some house parties, even though it is not allowed to drink alcohol in America until you are 21.

 Some American students learn how to play an instrument and a lot of them dream of becoming famous musicians.  When Americans play their instruments together with their friends, it’s called a “jam session.”  Usually, they will also invite other friends to just listen to the music and tell them if it sounds good.  Have a jam session = play music together

 These are some of the activities Americans do with their friends, but they are not the only ones.  For example, new American friends may also ask you to play basketball or video games with them.

For example…  Let’s [sit in front of a TV and kill bad guys].  Let’s play video games.

 Let’s [hang out at a large building with many shops inside].  Let’s go to the mall.

 Let’s [play some music together].  Let’s have a jam session.

 Let’s [hang out at someone’s home].  Let’s go to a house party.

 Let’s [go to a public place to watch a movie].  Let’s go to the cinema.

 We’ve already learned about some activities Americans like to do with friends.  Now, let’s learn how to invite your new friends to do these activities together.  To do this, it’s very important to know the difference between these two phrases:  “Do you like to…?” and  “Would you like to…?”  Many English learners confuse these two phrases, but if you use them incorrectly, it can lead to misunderstandings with your new friends!

 Li Wen: Hi! My name is Li Wen. What’s your name?  Brian: Hi! My name is Brian. Where are you from?  Li Wen: I’m from the Hunan province in China. How about you?  Brian: That’s so interesting! I’m from New York.  Li Wen: Wow! Do you like to go to the mall?  Brian: Yes, I often go there with my friends. Would you like to go to the mall this weekend?  Li Wen: Yes, let’s go!

 Look at this part of the conversation:  Li Wen: Wow! Do you like to go to the mall?  Brian: Yes, I often go there with my friends. Would you like to go to the mall this weekend?  Li Wen: Yes, let’s go! What does Li Wen mean when he says “Do you like to go to the mall?” What does Brian mean when he says “Would you like to go to the mall?”

 “Do you like to…?” means “Do you enjoy…?”  Li Wen wants to know if Brian enjoys going to the mall.  “Would you like to…?” means “Do you want to…?”  Brian is asking if Li Wen wants to go to the mall with him. He is making a suggestion.

 Another example: “Do you like tea?” The person is asking if you enjoy tea. “Would you like tea?” The person is asking if you want to drink tea.

 A: _____ you like to drink something?  B: Not at the moment, thank you.  Would you like to drink something?  A is asking if B wants to drink something (making a suggestion).

 A: _____ you like spicy food?  B: No, it always hurts my stomach.  Do you like spicy food?  A is asking if B enjoys spicy food.

 A: __________ to go to a jam session?  B: Not right now, I’m very busy.  Would you like to go to a jam session?  A is asking if B wants to go to a jam session.

 A: ____________ to go to the cinema?  B: I go to the cinema all the time! I love movies.  A: ____________ to go to the cinema now?  B: Sure, let’s go!  Do you like to go to the cinema? (A is asking if B enjoys going to the cinema.)  Would you like to go to the cinema now? (A is asking if B wants to go to the cinema.)

 Do you remember this conversation?  Li Wen: Hi! My name is Li Wen. What’s your name?  Brian: Hi! My name is Brian. Where are you from?  Li Wen: I’m from the Hunan province in China. How about you?  Brian: That’s so interesting! I’m from New York.  Li Wen: Wow! Do you like to go to the mall?  Brian: Yes, I often go there with my friends. Would you like to go to the mall this weekend?  Li Wen: Yes, let’s go!

 You are travelling to America for the first time. You meet a young American who looks nice and you start a conversation.  Write this conversation with the person sitting next to you.  Use “do you like to” to ask if the American enjoys doing something.  Use “would you like to” to ask if the American wants to do something with you (make a suggestion).  You can use one of the activities we learned about today (go to the mall, have a jam session) or any other activity you can think of.

 We’ve just talked about how to make friends with Americans. Now, let’s talk about friendship in general.  Do you think it’s easy to make a new friend? Why or why not?  What is the most important quality in a friend? (For example: “I think a good friend should be generous/kind/intelligent.”) Why is this important to you?

 “Everybody come and _____  Throw _____ _____ care away  Let’s ___ ____ ___ _____ today.”  “Everybody come and play  Throw every last care away  Let’s go to the mall today.”

 Guess the word on the board.  Raise your hand to guess what letters are in the word. For example: “I think there is an E in the word!”  If you guess right, your team gets a point.  If you can guess the whole word, your team gets two points!
