What’s a schism? What were two events/disagreements that caused the “Great Schism” in 1054? What were the religions that came out of the Great Schism?

They began in 1096 Christians/Muslims battled for control of the Middle East Great Schism happened 40 years earlier

During the late 1050’s, the Seljuk Turks started chipping away at the Byzantine Empire. The Seljuk Turks were Muslim and did 2 things Taking territory for their own Converting people to Islam

The Turks prevented Christians from visiting Jerusalem. So! Alexius I, Emperor of the Byzantine Empire, asked Pope Urban II for help. He needed Christian Knights to combat the Turks Why might that be an issue?????

Urban II gives a speech to his guys in support of the Byzantine people. He has alternate motives, though. Wanted more power in Europe Wanted to heal the schism that happened

1 st crusade Christians won Jerusalem and massacred Jews and Muslims in the city. Crusades had an awkward Push/Pull effect Eventually, The Crusaders divided into 4 Crusader States Which made them easier to attack for Muslims

Saladin and the Muslims (Seljuk Turks) took control of the holy land. The Crusaders launched a 3 rd crusade. They failed. However, Saladin opened Jerusalem for Christians to have pilgrimage.

The Crusaders (Roman Catholics) had helped Roman/Italian merchants economically. In order to get ahead of the Byzantine Empire (Constantinople– Eastern Orthodox), the Crusaders Attacked, Captured, and Looted Constantinople.

While the Crusaders attacked their original partners, the Muslims were bored. The Seljuks attacked the 4 Crusader states, and especially the city of Acre. The Muslims captured the city and massacred Christians– similarly what the Christians did 200 years earlier.
