Katakana

Similar to hiragana Katakana is also a phonetic character set; for foreign words BASICALLY the same rules apply to katakana as hiragana: Tenten’s Small tsu, ya, yo, yu Put period at the end of a sentence BUT, To extend the sound, use a ー instead of a vowel (is あ、 う) Sometimes there are small vowels; they act like small ya, yo, or yu to blend with the character in front of it to make one syllable: ファミリー (ふぁみりい) fa mi ri i
13
But kind of different… Katakana is generally straight forward and intuitive, but sometimes it is confusing Katakana is for ALL foreign words in Japanese. While the majority are English, sometimes there is Spanish, French, German… Ex. Part-time job in Japanese is “a ru ba i to”, not “paa to ta i mu joo bu” (origins are German) Not always intuitive: Te re bi The English meaning is television
14
Be careful There is a STRONG tendency to speak katakana like English. RESIST!! Katakana is NOT English, it is Japanese. Be sure to speak out each katakana like a syllable, and it will help you: ニューヨーク (にゅう ようく) NYC アメリカ (あめりか) America サンドイッチ (さんどいっち) sandwich
