The Full and Final Thesis 1. Why is the full and final thesis called the ignition key? - without it the essay has no power!! 2. Define full thesis – said earlier, thesis is your opinion sharpened to one pointed statement. 3. What are 3 elements of your full thesis? 1. thesis 2. points that can be made against your thesis 3. points that can be made in favor of your thesis 4. The full thesis statement never appears in its original form in the finished essay. 5. The 3 elements of a full thesis represent the psychology of all argument both written and oral. - the goal of any argument or essay is to win others to your side; to persuade. 6. How to make a Persuasive Argument: How do you get dad to allow you to take the car again? (after you have dented it?) 1. Just ask – direct approach (he thinks you're crazy) 2. Make him feel guilty – (I’m not 10 yrs. old) (I dent one lousy fender and you act like it was a crime) 3. Start off with a request instead of a demand. -respect – recognize his authority (Dad I hope you’ll consider letting me use the car) 1

- admission – fix the problem (I know I dented the fender) (I will pay for it) -ask what he wants – (I’d like another chance to prove to you that you can trust me) Model Thesis 1) I hope you’ll consider Antithesis 2) I know that I was the one to blame Prothesis3) I made a date to have the car fixed. Please trust me. Which order do you put arguments? organizing – always follow a pattern present in ascending scale. LEAST STRONG ARGUMENT STRONGEST ARGUMENT Every argument conforms to a pattern Essay Pattern: 1. statement of case 2. recognition of the opposition 3. defense --the strongest argument last Essay identical to debate or trial – represent both sides. 2

3 Why put full thesis on a card or separate sheet of paper? - keep it in full view at all times when you are working on your essay. Why are the con arguments placed on the left? -so you can take care of these first. Then you can move on, developing fully the pro arguments that support your thesis. What is the difference between an essay paper and a literature paper? - in a literature paper you do not have to analyze both sides.

4 Literature paper – full thesis What points need to be made? - seldom controversial enough to require the full “Pro-con” treatment. -the main purpose is not to argue, but to explore and explain only a list of the points that support the thesis. *Literature essays use all evidence to support or eliminate against. *Key to a literature essay Evidence (DATA)
