1
Renewable and Non-renewable Resources
2
Renewable Resources Solar Geothermal Wind Biomass Hydroelectric
3
RENEWABLE RESOURCES Renewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time. ● Solar ● Geothermal ● Wind ● Biomass ● Water
4
SOLAR Energy from the sun.
5
GEOTHERMAL Energy from Earth’s heat.
6
WIND Energy from the wind.
7
BIOMASS Energy from burning organic or living matter.
8
WATER or HYDROELECTRIC Energy from the flow of water.
9
Non-Renewable Resources Nuclear Fossil Fuels: Coal Petroleum (oil) Natural Gas
10
NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES A natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption.
11
NUCLEAR ENERGY Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource because once the uranium is used, it is gone! REVIEW: Is nuclear energy potential or kinetic???
12
NUCLEAR ENEGRY PROSCONS High amount of energy Not as much pollution Could harm 1000s of people Creates radioactive waste
13
COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels.
14
COAL PROSCONS Gives us 50% of our energy Cheap Pollutes the air Dangerous for miners
15
OIL PROSCONS Powerful when burned Current technology uses it Prices are rising Terrible Accidents Run out it <50 years
16
NATURAL GAS PROSCONS Burns the cleanest out of fossil fuels If there is a leak, you can’t notice it
