The Tollund Man This body was found in a peat bog on Tollund Fen in Denmark in May 1950. Two men were digging peat for burning. As they worked they suddenly saw in the peat layer a face so fresh they thought they had come across a recent murder. They called the police. The men carefully removed the peat from the body till more of him could be seen. The man lay on his right side as if he was asleep. He wore no clothes, except for a pointed skin cap and a smooth hide belt. His hair was cut short. Round the neck was a rope noose and an iron neck ring. It was drawn tight around his neck and throat.

At the National Museum of Denmark, a small sample was taken from the Tollund Man's body and used as the basis for the readings. The datings reveal that he must have died 4-300 years B.C. In other words immediately after the end of the Bronze Age in Denmark.

Police Scientific Report The heart and lungs were healthy when he died. The man had eaten a soup 12 hours before he died. The soup was made up of seeds from Spring. Plants trapped with his body have been found. They are 2000 years old.

ACTIVITY! Use the evidence packs and work as a table to fill in your evidence sheets deciding how he died – a)Was it SACRIFICE? b)Was it PUNISHMENT?

When people died their bodies would normally be cremated (burned). Iron age people buried their dead with neck rings as an offering to the Spring Goddess. Only people who were sacrificed were buried. The German tribes used to sacrifice slaves to the Goddess of Spring. Investigations of his stomach found he had eaten a soup or gruel about 12 hours before he died. Scientists believe he might have been hanged. The soup was made up of lots of seeds from Spring time. Tollund Man was carefully placed in the Bog grave. His eyes and mouth were closed in a respectful way. “The German Tribes hang traitors from tree and drown cowards under piles of sticks in swamps”. Tacitus (a Roman Historian writing in 97 AD – about 400 years after Tollund Man died) “I think that Tollund Man was a sacrifice to thank a god in return for the peat that was dug from the god's bog.” Christian Fischer, Silkeborg Museum, Denmark, 2014 Peat was very important for people in the Iron Age. It was dug from boggy areas for fuel. Scientists think Tollund Man’s death was not violent. His hands were not tied and he had no injuries. “The German Tribes worshipped the Goddess of Spring. Every Spring a cart carried a statue of the Goddess in a special procession. Afterwards slaves were sacrificed.” Prof. Hilton, University of Oxford 1985. Tollund man was healthy. His teeth and organs were in good condition.
