PROCESSING TECHNIQUES IN GEOGRAPHY.

Starter In our last lesson we looked at some of the different ways in which we can gather information. It is just as important that we know how to process this information. Talk to each other and come up with as many different processing techniques as you can think of.

Processing techniques What you will find as you go through this course is that there are many different processing techniques that you have not even hear of yet. But that is one of the reasons that you are here. It will be very important that you are able to pick out the correct processing techniques for your field study.

Presentation of processing techniques This is a very important part of the Geographic study as you are marked on your presentation. Due to this I would advice you to make graphs and diagrams on computers. Although very high quality hand drawn ones would be fine.

Traffic survey: processing Think about the traffic survey that you conducted. How could you process the information that you gathered? Take 2 minutes and think of different ways and what you think would be the most appropriate techniques.

Traffic survey: processing Most basic technique: Put the information into a table. This is simple but it looks a lot better than hand drawn recordings (it is important that you keep the hand drawn recordings for evidence though so don’t throw them away)

Traffic survey: processing Bar graph Information could be clearly displayed in a bar graph. Different colours could be used for different vehicles. Two graphs would have to be drawn for different directions. Unless your graph was created to show both (double bar graph)

Traffic flow graph This is most likely a new technique to you.

Number of vehicles 20 Traffic flow graph 0 1030 70 What other information would you have to add here?
