3
Authoritative Combines warmth with appropriate rules & guidelines. – Attentive to their child’s needs & concerns – Set clear standards & modify those standards as the child grows – Punishments are seen as learning experiences Children are more independent
4
Authoritarian “Favoring unquestioning obedience” – Little/no open dialogue – High expectations, strict rules & punishments, but no explanations Children tend to be less socially competent – Either become dependent upon or resistant to others.
5
Permissive Very involved but have few limitations – Little/no demands, expectations, or controls for children – Do not require children to behave appropriately Children tend to be more impulsive – Risk of participating in heavy drinking underage triples
6
Uninvolved Virtually no involvement in child’s life – No limits are set – No emotional support – Simply provide the basic needs Children tend to provide for themselves – Often emotionally withdrawn – Fearful of depending on others – Higher delinquency rates – Higher risk of substance abuse
