Table of Contents Goals The Design Process Simulation Center Questions

The most important aspect of our project was adherence to the Design Process Recognize Specifications Communicate solution Brainstorm Evaluate Analysis Define problem & gather information

We began the project by identifying the Need/Opportunity/Problem To develop a product that would highlight: Southern Allegheny Innovation Network (SAIN)

Our purpose was to create a sustainable, and innovative showcase This showcase would focus on Energy Usage We developed this for Alleghany College of Maryland

Periodic research identified key specifications Maintaining Interest SustainabilityCost Upkeep Stakeholder Approval

Our concept generation/brainstorming phase yield several possible ideas This yielded the concepts of insulation, lighting, greywater, and peak energy We chose the “Simulation Center,” an interactive touchscreen exhibit Outdoor ExhibitIndoor ExhibitDeconstuctible ExhibitPermanent Structure/HouseSimulation Center Interesting00011 Cost-Effective111 Interactive00011 Innovative/Unique 01 Educational11111 Generates Tourism11111 Practical1110 Flexibility0011 Viable Year-Round0101 Engaging00001 Raw Score23516 Weighted Score3.173.674.51.675.16

The design phase was a repeated process and helped identify issues with concepts The first design phase’s concept was rejected The second design phase’s concept needed to be polished The third design phase yielded our final concept 1 st Design Phase 2 nd Design Phase 3 rd Design Phase

The prototyping phase did not produce a physical model, instead a SketchUp representation was made

We decided that a “Simulation Center” would most effectively educate and occupy participants This simulation center would have touch screens that would maximize interaction Costs are around $15,000 for software development, computers, and exhibits A possible touch screen for our implementation of the project

Mistakes made during the project further familiarized us with the Design Process A few of our decisions and processes were improperly timed Mistakes will allow for Design Project II’s success Task NameDurationStartFinish Coordinate responsibilities with classmates2 daysWed 1/22/14Thu 1/23/14 Determine what college will be focused2 daysWed 1/22/14Thu 1/23/14 Research College2 daysWed 1/22/14Thu 1/23/14 Plan Project2 daysThu 1/23/14Fri 1/24/14 Identify Needs and Rank Importance of Needs 2 daysThu 1/23/14Fri 1/24/14 Identify Specifications2 daysThu 1/23/14Fri 1/24/14 Research Current Energy Systems2 daysThu 1/23/14Fri 1/24/14 Brainstorm Solutions2 daysThu 1/23/14Fri 1/24/14 Evaluate and Analyze Solutions2 daysThu 1/23/14Fri 1/24/14 Conduct Market Research5 daysThu 1/23/14Wed 1/29/14 Choose the Optimal Concept2 daysWed 1/29/14Thu 1/30/14 Further Research into Selected Concept3 daysThu 1/30/14Sat 2/1/14 Create Basic Sketches of Ideas2 daysSat 2/1/14Mon 2/3/14 Review Sketches3 daysMon 2/3/14Wed 2/5/14 Form Detailed Sketches3 daysWed 2/5/14Fri 2/7/14 Review Sketches2 daysFri 2/7/14Sun 2/9/14 Create Model In SketchUp6 daysMon 2/10/14Mon 2/17/14 Decide How to Present Concept4 daysMon 2/17/14Thu 2/20/14 Create Visual Aides7 daysFri 2/21/14Mon 3/3/14 Rehearse Presentation3 daysMon 3/3/14Wed 3/5/14 Give Presentation1 dayWed 3/5/14 Finish Project1 dayThu 3/6/14
