2 www.utm.my innovative ● entrepreneurial ● global 2 Issues of Concerns in Global Reputation 2 The Roman wit Publilius Syrus famously wrote: “A good reputation is more valuable than money.” But in today’s academy, reputation is the currency: research has shown that institutional standing is the top consideration for academics when moving jobs, is vital for the formation of international collaborations, and is essential in persuading philanthropists to give and industrial partners to invest. 3 www.utm.my innovative ● entrepreneurial ● global 3 Rankings: a measure of Global Reputation? ● Rankings, ratings and accreditation of academic institutions are new forces in national and global higher education ● These recognitions (esp rankings) are criticized but, nonetheless, taken seriously by potential (international) students, individuals, public, universities, scholarship sponsors and governments. ● Show no signs of disappearing…Rankings are here to stay ● Global Rankings and prominence are aligned with the strategic directions of the new Higher Education Blueprint. “Rankings do have influence on student decisions, particularly when it comes to international students selecting where they will study”. – Prof Simon Margison, Melbourne University

4 www.utm.my innovative ● entrepreneurial ● global 4 Issues of Concerns ● Ranking is the ‘SCORER’ – cumulative effects of all university strategic agenda which include outputs from academic, research, quality graduates, university- industry relations, internationalisation, customer services, sustainable campus, financial sustainability etc.

5 www.utm.my innovative ● entrepreneurial ● global 5 Issues of Concerns ● Knowledge gap between universities in developed and developing countries is still wide and widening ● Without strong fundamentals, sufficient resources and out-of- ordinary outputs, it is very difficult for UTM to complete with other institutions with bigger resources, longer history and stronger supports etc ● UTM is not ranked #1 in Malaysia in Engineering and Technology (#3). ● Research outputs especially number of publications and citations are still relatively low.

Current number of international students need to be sustained/improved. Still poor. Good progress, but urgent need to enhance the progression rate by encouraging more staff to publish (because higher number of staff will decrease the ratio). More international collaboration required. More full-time researchers and Academic Fellows are needed to enhance teaching quality. Poor. Relationship between UTM and industry/multinationals need to be improved/strategised urgently. Enhance the roles of alumni. Good progress. Continuing international engagements and partnerships are required esp discipline- based. Stronger communication of UTM brands globally.
