Learn how to incorporate real-time science with your instruction! Katrina Alegado 7 th Grade Science Tahoma Middle School Tahoma School District

A little about me…

Learning Targets I can gain a deeper understanding of real-time data and near real-time data. I can navigate and utilize the MBARI EARTH Website. I can use specific lessons from the MBARI EARTH Website in my classroom and develop a plan for implementation (possibly with CERR). I can utilize other science resources to enhance my instruction.

Session Agenda Introduction to Real-Time Data. EARTH MBARI Workshops. Example lessons with resources. Explore the EARTH MBARI Website. Find and adjust/modify specific lessons for your grade & level to use in your classroom. More resources to share.

Discussion Explain your idea of real-time or near-real-time data in a science classroom at any level.

Real-Time Data IOOS (Integrated Ocean Observing System) http://ioos.noaa.gov/ NANOOS (Northwest Association of Networked Ocean Observing Systems) http://www.nanoos.org/ SECOORA (Southeast Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association) http://secoora.org/data

What is MBARI?  The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) was founded in 1987 by David Packard.  The mission of MBARI is to achieve and maintain a position as a world center for advanced research and education in ocean science and technology, and to do so through the development of better instruments, systems, and methods for scientific research in the deep waters of the ocean. MBARI emphasizes the peer relationship between engineers and scientists as a basic principle of its operation. All of the activities of MBARI must be characterized by excellence, innovation, and vision.  http://www.mbari.org/ http://www.mbari.org/

What is EARTH? EARTH: Education And Research: Testing Hypotheses A professional development program for educators. The focus is on near-real time data from scientists conducting current research and curriculum development. Workshops are held around the United States, with a different location every year.

Real-Time Science Workshops!

Objectives of Workshop  Educate, excite, and engage teachers with the concept of observatory (surface, benthic, and pelagic) data in the classroom.  Develop curricula enabling teachers and students to utilize near-real-time data.  Increase scientific literacy in microbial oceanography.  Produce leaders in the next generation of microbial oceanographers by providing state-of- the art training.

Learning from Scientists Marine Tsunami Debris Dr. John Chapman

Hands-On Science Research Expedition Experience! Behind the scenes tours!

Professional Collaboration Meetings and workshops are centered around collaboration. Educators are gathered from around the United States from all different levels and educational institutions.

Local People & Culture Learning from the locals! Visits to local aquariums and research facilities.

Lots of Fun! Trips to local towns! Beautiful scenery!

Curriculum Development After learning from scientists and their research, we are responsible for creating a lesson/unit for students. We work individually or together in subject groups. My lesson this year was using Aurasma to demonstrate comprehension of marine tsunami debris with real time data ending with a CERR! http://www.mbari.org/hitchhikers-guide/

Claim, Evidence, Reasoning, and Rebuttal (CERR)

How to Apply  ANY teacher can apply at ANY level.  Requirements:  Teach one lesson or more from the website.  Fill out and submit a rubric.  Complete and submit a cover letter.  Ten teachers are chosen from the current location area and ten from the rest of the United States.  ALL expenses are paid. (Yes, ALL!)

MBARI EARTH Website Explore the website and look for lessons you might be able to use. There are no grade levels posted on the lessons, mostly because we want everyone to be able to use them. These lessons were written by teachers using near-real-time-data or real-time-data. Come up with an idea for implementation in your classroom.
