Exponents are a shorthand way to show a larger number. What is an exponent?

How do you read an exponent? A number with an exponent is said to be "raised to the power" of that exponent. Let’s look at some examples....

3 2 = three raised to the second power or three squared 5 3 = five raised to the third power or five cubed 7 4 = seven raised to the fourth power

An exponent tells how many times the base is multiplied by itself. What does an exponent mean? 7 3 means 7 x 7 x 7 or 343

Any number raised to the 0 power is equal to one! 10 0 = 1 Helpful Tips Any number raised to the 1 st power is equal to the number itself. 8 1 = 8
