High performance, full-featured text search engine written in Java. Technology suitable for nearly any application requiring full-text search, especially cross-platform. Simplifies security model: doesn’t use its own dedicated port. Well-designed, well-documented. Incremental indexing; flexible data sources (file or stream). Adaptable relevance ranking. Supports Boolean, phrase, fuzzy, wildcard and fielded queries. Supports document boosting No “native” spatial or temporal search. Currently used for new requirement: Geospatial One-Stop Jakarta Lucene

Update on Open Source Package: Lucene Lucene’s free-text search will be used to query the database and to refine results from the science keyword search. Lucene can also be used in combination with a geospatial map query.

Keyword Search through the Hierarchy Choose topic from data set topics. –e.g. Biosphere

Choosing a Term Choose a term from the hierarchy –Ecological Dynamics

Choosing a Variable Choose a variable from the hierarchy. Number of DIFs are represented

Refining a Search by Free-text Bread crumb allows users to see what searches they have done. Can refine by (Lucene) free- text search. –e.g. Fire Occurrence

Refining a Search by Dropdown Menu Refine more by: –Projects –Data Centers –Locations –Instruments –Platforms/ Sources –Parameters

New Spatial Query New IDN geospatial search interface has a spatial query that uses Lucene and requires the use of Java applets in order to query the server. Interface provides searchable map that allows one to draw a bounding box, enter a search term, and provide a time filter to search for data.

Spatial Search Capabilities and Technology Extended Lucene search software to support spatial queries using OpenGIS standards defined for spatial databases. Improved support for defining locations of interest. Defining locations within the DIF using a set of coordinates that express coverage as a shape: a polygon, line, multi- points, or multi-polygons. Use shapes to define user’s area of interest and combine with spatial comparison functions (“intersect”, “contains”, “crosses”) to define more precisely spatial coverage represented by the metadata. Future work: integrate new spatial map to allow users to select area of interest.

Search Interface and Results Narrow search area Enter search term IDN DIF Results
