5 Examples:  Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.  First of all, let me thank you all for coming here today.  I’m delighted that so many of you could make it today.  Welcome to Telkom Polytechnic. It’s an honor to have the opportunity to address such a distinguished audience

6 Examples:  Let me introduce myself. I’m Dave Elwood from …  For those of you who don’t know me, my name’s …  I know I’ve met some of you, but just for the benefit of those I haven’t, my name’s ….  As you probably know, I’m the new HR manager.

7 Examples (Cont):  I’m head of logistics here at Air Spares.  I’m here in my function as the Head of Controlling.  Let me start by saying just a few words about my own background. My name’s is … and I’m responsible for public affairs.

8 Examples:  Today I’d like to talk to you about …  As you can see on the screen, our topic today is …  I’m going to inform you about …  What I’d like to present to you today is …  The focus of my presentation is …

9 There are several ways you can tell the audience what your topic is or what you are going to say: Would like + Infinitive ’d like to tell  Today I ’d like to tell you about our new plans. ’d like to bring  This morning I ’d like to bring you up to date on our department. Going to + Infinitive ’m going to talk  I ’m going to talk to you about new developments in the R&D department. ’m going to be reporting  This afternoon I ’m going to be reporting on the new division.

10 There are several ways you can tell the audience what you are going to say: Will + Infinitive ’ll begin  I ’ll begin by explaining the function. ’ll start off  I ’ll start off by reviewing our progress. ’ll move  After that, I ’ll move on to my next point. Will be + Verb -ing ’ll be talking  I ’ll be talking about our guidelines for internet use. ’ll be looking  During the next hour we ’ll be looking at the advantages of this system.

11 Examples:  My talk is particularly relevant to those of you who …  Today’s topic is of particular interest to those of you who …  The topic is very important for you because…  By the end of this talk you will be familiar with…

13  What I want to do today is …  OK, shall we get started?  Today I’m going to talk about …  I know you are all very busy. FormalInformal Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Today I would like to … Let me just start by introducing myself. My name is … It’s a pleasure to welcome you today. In my presentation I would like to report on … The topic of today’s presentation is … I suggest that we begin now. I’m aware that you all have very tight schedules.  It’s good to see you all here.  In my talk I’ll tell you about …  As you know, I’m …  Hi, everyone.

14 The purpose of the introduction is not only to tell the audience who you are, what the talk is about, and why it is relevant to them, you also want to how the talk is structured. tell the audience how the talk is structured. The most common way to structure a presentation three main partssubdivide is to have three main parts, and then subdivide them into three smaller sections them into three smaller sections.

17 the organization of the talk The final part of the introduction deals with the organization of the talk:  How long it will last  Whether there will be handouts  How questions will be handled

18 Examples:  My presentation will take about 20 minutes.  It should take about 30 minutes to cover these issues.  I shall only take 15 minutes of your time.  This should only last 20 minutes.

19 Examples:  Does everybody have a handout/brochure/report? Please take one and pass them on.  Don’t worry about taking notes. I’ve put all the important statistics on a handout for you.  I’ll be handing out copies of the Power Point slides at the end of my talk.  I’ll email the Power Point presentation to you.

20 Examples:  There will be time for questions after my presentation.  I’d be glad to answer any questions at the end of my talk  If you have any questions, feel free to interrupt me at any time.  Please interrupt me if there’s something which needs clarifying. Otherwise, there’ll be time for discussion at the end.
