2 1.Who were the Severans? What did they spend their time doing?

3 AFTER THE “PAX ROMANA”…… Emperors who ruled during a century of confusion. They spent their time putting down revolts and protecting Rome’s borders from barbarians.

4 2. List seven political and social problems of ancient Rome.

5 1. Army leaders fought each other. 2. Few people honored the old ideals of duty, courage and loyalty. 3. Officials took bribes. 4. Many talented people refused to serve in government.

6 5. People stopped paying taxes. 6. Education was not considered important and declined. 7. Slavery increased (40% of Rome’s population were enslaved) DO YOU SEE ANY SIMILARITIES WITH AMERICA??

7 3. Describe how Rome’s economy suffered (it deals with farming and shopkeepers).

8 Farmers grew less food. Artisans produced less. Shopkeepers lost money.

9 4. How does inflation occur? What did the government do to try to solve this problem?

10 Money loses its value. The government put less gold in the money so that they could mint, or make, more coins. Since money had lost its value, people began to BARTER.

12 Germanic soldiers were not loyal to Rome.

14 AD 284- AD 305 1. He divided the empire into 4 smaller parts in order to control it. 2. He made rules that set prices and wages. 3. Workers had to stay at certain jobs for a set amount of time.

16 AD 312 He moved his capital to Byzantium which he renamed Constantinople (after himself). Today it is Istanbul.

22 They needed protection from the Huns (Attila). The Visigoths rebelled and defeated the Romans at the Battle of Atrianople. Rome had to surrender land and this was the first time Rome had been defeated in 800 years!!

28 AD 476 The Germanic general Odoacer overthrew the 14 year old Roman emperor ROMULUS AUGUSTULUS. This marks the end of the WESTERN Roman Empire. This is the end of the Roman Empire.
