CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator The role of the practitioner – food and nutrition All settings will have policies and procedures regarding food and drink. A prime area of the EYFS (2012) is physical development and this includes health and self-care and states that ‘Children should know the importance of a healthy diet.’ When providing food and drink practitioners must ensure that any special dietary requirements are met. All children should be encouraged to make healthy choices. Practitioners should be positive role models. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO6 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to the health and well-being requirements of current frameworks [AC 6.1]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Pairs activity Time: 15 mins Describe the role of the practitioner in your setting in relation to food and nutrition. Consider: Do practitioners sit with children when they are eating and drinking? How are dietary requirements identified? Are all children encouraged to stop to have a snack and drink? Are there opportunities to discuss healthy options? © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO6 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to the health and well-being requirements of current frameworks [AC 6.1]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator The role of the practitioner – physical exercise All settings will provide opportunities for children to exercise. Physical development (EYFS) states; ‘Physical development involves providing young children with opportunities to be active and interactive, and to develop their coordination, control and movement.’ When providing opportunities for physical exercise practitioners must ensure that children are safe. All children should be given the chance for stretch and challenge. All physical exercise must be age and stage appropriate. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO6 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to the health and well-being requirements of current frameworks [AC 6.1]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Group activity Time: 15 mins Discuss the provision of physical exercise in your setting. Consider: Outdoor/indoor provision The role of the practitioner Availability Planning and resources Health and safety Meeting individual needs. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO6 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to the health and well-being requirements of current frameworks [AC 6.1]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator The role of the practitioner – outdoor play provision Section 3.58 of the EYFS states: ‘Providers must provide access to an outdoor play area or, if that is not possible, ensure that outdoor activities are planned and taken on a daily basis’. The prime area of physical development says that children must be provided with opportunities to be active and interactive. Practitioners should plan an exciting, stimulating and varied outdoor experience. Practitioners should ensure that all children access the outdoor space. Practitioners must provide equipment that is age and stage appropriate. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO6 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to the health and well-being requirements of current frameworks [AC 6.1]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Pairs activity Time: 15 mins Thinking back to your Group activity discussion, describe the role of the practitioner during outdoor play. Consider: Is there a rota for practitioners to take it in turns to be outside? Do all practitioners take their turn? Are practitioners involved in outdoor play or do they ‘patrol’ the area? Is the outdoor play area inviting? Do all children use the area? Do you enjoy being outside? © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO6 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to the health and well-being requirements of current frameworks [AC 6.1]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator The role of the practitioner – emotional well-being The EYFS recognises the importance of the key person when it states that; Each child must be assigned a key person (Statutory Framework for the EYFS DfE 2012). A key person will have responsibility for specific children but all practitioners will support the emotional well-being of all children. Practitioners will provide a calm, consistent and welcoming environment and this will support a child’s well-being. All practitioners will maintain a safe and healthy environment. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO6 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to the health and well-being requirements of current frameworks [AC 6.1]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Classroom discussion activity Time: 15 mins Discuss how practitioners provide an environment that supports all children’s emotional well-being. Consider: How does the setting deal with conflict? How are children encouraged to manage their own behaviour? Are there always activities available that will support children to express their emotions? Is there time for children to talk and be listened to? © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO6 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to the health and well-being requirements of current frameworks [AC 6.1]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator The role of the practitioner – inclusion The guidance for ‘Inclusion and the EYFS profile’ states; ‘the EYFS profile requires practitioners to enable all children to reach their full potential. Consequently, you must be alert to the general diversity of children’s interests, needs and inclinations.’ Practitioners will plan to meet the individual needs of all children and will be adaptable and flexible in their planning and delivery of activities and experiences. Practitioners will not tolerate discrimination and will challenge all forms of it. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO6 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to the health and well-being requirements of current frameworks [AC 6.1]

CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator Reflection activity Time: 15 mins How inclusive are you? Consider: Your ability to include all children in everything you do Your ability to challenge children who are not being inclusive Your ability to be adaptable and flexible to ensure all children can take part to the best of their ability Your ability to work with all children equally. © Hodder & Stoughton Limited LO6 Understand the role of the early years practitioner in relation to the health and well-being requirements of current frameworks [AC 6.1]
