Objective Students will identify Costas 3 levels of questioning

COSTA’S LEVEL 1 QUESTIONING This is the lowest level requiring one to recall and gather information.

Level 1 Questions The answer can be found in the text. Very concrete and pertains to the text Asks for facts about what has been heard or read. Information is recalled in the exact manner/form it was heard.

Level 1 Question Vocabulary Defining – Describing Identifying- Listing - Naming Observing Reciting – Scanning How does “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost begin? ”What is the definition of “lunar eclipse” Which state seceded from the union to form the Confederacy? How can we express the equation 2x(4-5y)=3y in three ways?

COSTA’S LEVEL 2 QUESTIONING This level requires one to make meaning and process the information.

Level 2 Questions The answer can be inferred from the text. Information can be broken down into parts. Involves examining in detail, analyzing motives or causes, making inferences, finding information to support generalizations or decision making. Questions combine information in a new way.

Level 2 Question Vocabulary Analyzing – Comparing Contrasting Grouping In Native Son, how does the Bigger Thomas violence against his gang members reveal a deeply rooted insecurity and few of people? In “The Bet,” how do the lawyer and the banker differ in their attitudes towards capital punishment?

Level 2 Question Vocabulary Inferring Sequencing Synthesizing If the moon is full Aug 17, July 18, and June 19, when will it be full in April? How does the term “manifest destiny” capture the essence of western expansion in the United States

COSTA’S LEVEL 3 QUESTIONING Level 3 is the highest level and requires one to apply and evaluate the actions and solutions from the information.

Level 3 Questions The answer goes beyond the text. Is abstract and does not pertain to the text. Asks that judgments be made from information. Gives opinions about issues Justifies opinions and ideas.

Level 3 Question Vocabulary Applying a Principle – Evaluating Hypothesizing Imagining Using the principle of communication property, how can we find out the number of apple trees in an orchard having 15 rows, 5 trees each?

Level 3 Question Vocabulary Judging Predicting Speculating Which of the characters in Great Expectations suffered the most? In Catcher in the Rye, how might Phoebe, years later, describe Holden to her children?

Level of Questions For Science Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 What is a gene? What is a chromosome? Use what you know about genes and chromosomes to predict a trait in a child. Compare and contrast genes and chromosomes.

Question Sort In tutorial groups sort the questions in to the different levels of questioning. Have the teacher check them!

Writing Questions Choose 2 questions from each Costas Level Sort and write them to be level 1, 2, 3 questions!
