2 The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a sovereign state located off the north-western coast of continental Europe. The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and unitary state. The UK is a developed country, with the world's sixth largest economy - -It consists of four countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. -The capital city is London. - The UK is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the English Channel, and the Irish Sea.

On 1 May 1707, the united Kingdom of Great Britain was created by the political union of the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland In 1927, the formal title of the UK was changed to its current form, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom was one of the three main Allies of World War II. The United Kingdom was one of the 12 founding members of the European Union at its launch in 1992 with the signing of the Maastricht Treaty.

4 GEOGRAPHY OF THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND The total area of the United Kingdom is 243,610 square kilometres. It lies between the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea The coastline of Great Britain is 17,820 kilometres The United Kingdom has a temperate climate, with plentiful rainfall all year round. The Royal Greenwich Observatory, in London, is the defining point of the Prime Meridian.

5 POLITICS OF THE UK The UK has a parliamentary government based on the Westminster system. The Parliament of the United Kingdom has two houses: the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The Cabinet is traditionally drawn from members of the Prime Minister's party in both legislative houses. There are three major political parties in the UK.

6 ROYAL FAMILY The Queen is Her Majesty, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Sons of a sovereign have priority over the daughters Queen Elizabeth II married Philip Mountbatten in 1947 and they got four children Princes and Princesses who married a catholic are ruled out of the succession

9 ROYAL FAMILY TODAY... In Britain…In other democratic countries… People are «subjects»- subjects of Her Majesty the Queen. They have citizens. The monarch is a living symbol of the country. They have material symbols of the country- usually flags and emblems. Royal ceremonies are the most popular and colourful ceremonies of the year. Public holidays and parades are popular.
