Who was Jim Crow? Jim Crow was the invention of the comedian Thomas D. Rice. He played a stereotype of a singing and dancing black man, who was unintelligent, but happy with his life. It was also known as a slang name for a black man.

What was the reason for the Jim Crow Laws? After the Civil War (or the s.c. Emancipation Proclamation 1861-1865) under Abraham Lincoln, the Southern States were supposed to stop the slavery. The southern Landlords had the right to let their land to the old slaves, who than had to give a part of their crops the Landlords. → Sharecropping After a few years, the poor lodgers were more and more in dept. (Down-spiral) When the army troops arrived in the time of the Reconstruction period, they pretended the “New slavery system“ because there have been the Amendments of Constitution (Verfassungsänderungen) and a law called the abolition of slavery. Also the right for every citizen with an american origin to vote was established with the Amendments of Constitution → unexperienced blacks could be easily tricked by white politicans After the troops left, the constitution failed

Ferguson verified the Laws
