EFFECTIVE SENTENCES

Sentence or Sentence Fragment: a sentence must contain a subject, predicate and must express a complete thought. E.g.: They jumped over the fence. (sentence) Lost keys. (fragment)

Run-on Sentences: A run-on sentence is two or more sentences run together without proper punctuation as if they one sentence.

There is more than one way to revise a run-on sentence. You can break the run-on into two complete sentences, or you can link the two ideas with a comma and a coordinating conjunction such as and, but, or.

E.g. #1:I love to write papers I would write one every day if I had the time.

Method 1: I love to write papers. I would write one every day if I had the time.

Method 2: I love to write papers, and I would write one every day if I had the time.

Method 3: BecauseI love to write papers,I would write one every day if I had the time.

E.g. #2: Participants could leave the study at any time, they needed to indicate their preference.

Stringy Sentences: If you string many ideas together with and, you create a stringy sentence. A stringy sentences ramble on and on. They do not give the reader a chance to pause between ideas.
