Dogs & Heartworm Disease
2
What is Heartworm Disease? Heartworm disease clogs up a dog’s heart and the major blood vessels leading to the heart and lungs. This heartworm blockage reduces the blood supply to other major organs of the animal’s body, especially the lungs, liver and kidneys. Prolonged blood reduction to vital organs can cause them to malfunction.

Symptoms of Heartworm Disease Initial symptoms for an infected dog may be mild and subtle and are often chocked up to aging. Most dogs do not show any early signs of the disease, which means by the time it is caught it is usually in an advanced state, making it riskier and more difficult to cure.

Quick Facts About Heartworms A successful heartworm treatment begins with ridding a dog’s system of the immature worms (microfilaria) circulating in its blood. Heartworm disease in dogs is found worldwide. Left untreated, heartworms can plug up a dog’s pulmonary arteries and can back up into the heart and fill it. Besides surgery, Immiticide® by Merial is the only approved treatment for the removal of adult heartworms in a dog. It involves two or three deep muscle injections, given at monthly intervals and limiting a dog’s activity for the duration of the treatment. The process of killing the worms presents the risk of other serious health problems as the worms die and break up. Dogs who live through this treatment often exhibit more energy and spark with improved appetite and weight gain.
