BISHOP’S CONVOCATION OCTOBER 18, 2016 HOLY TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH CHANDLER, AZ BISHOP’S TIME
2
REGION 2 CONSULTATION ON THE LEADERS WE NEED FOR THE 21 ST CENTURY Region 2 Bishops, Vice-Presidents, and Directors for Evangelical Lutheran Mission were asked to identify three areas of skill set our current leaders and next generation of leaders will need to develop to lead vibrant and thriving congregations.
3
CONTEXTS FOR SERVICE New Starts, Congregations Under Development, Synodically- Authorized Worshiping Communities Renewing or Redeveloping Congregations Established Congregations (growing or stable) Specialized Ministries: Campus Ministry, Outdoor Ministry, Mission Experiments
4
1. CHANGE LEADERSHIP Leaders need to know the reality of the Church today, their local setting both in the congregation and outside the congregation, read trend lines, navigate, delegate, and negotiate.
5
SKILLS NEEDED Ability to articulate and keep the mission and vision in front of the community in the context of a multi-faith and multi-cultural world.
6
Conflict Management-Leading in the face of change will always result in some level of conflict. Training of Rostered Ministers and local lay leaders in healthy practices for managing conflict will be critical.
7
Increased Administrative Competency-Executive skills such as recruitment and development of volunteers, basic financial management, human resources and property management. Current recommended resource: Executive Skills for Pastors offered by California Lutheran University
8
Marketing (Evangelism) and Team Building-a recent report from Research and Evaluation at Churchwide indicated that 60% of our clergy do not see Evangelism as a priority of their call. How do we re-emphasize our commission from Jesus to grow disciples, how do we tell and re-tell the old, old story, how do we use social media and increase our media competency to increase our ability to share the good news and intentionally invite?
9
Develop Emotional Intelligence in the area of Self-Awareness and Self-Regulation-how can assessment both of staff and congregation be part of the regular DNA of a local community? How can Rostered leaders engage in safe and honest feedback loops so that they can tend to those areas that become a focus or disruption to effectively leading the congregation and avoid the blame game cycle?
10
Bridge-Building and Cross-Cultural Competency-We know the majority of our congregations and donor-base are part of the Builder Generation and Christendom worldview. How do we lead this generation to engage the generations following particularly those deeply rooted in a post- Christendom worldview? The ELCA has not significantly increased its non-white membership in 28 years, but the population of the U.S and particularly in the GCS is increasingly moving to non-white majority in population.
11
How might we use Faith-Based Organizing and Anti- Racism training within the context of our congregations to be leaders in connecting and rooting the Gospel in our local context and actually increase the diversity of our faith family?
12
2. PREACHING AND TEACHING Increase commitment to life-long communication development- How do we integrate intentional continuing education around Preaching and Communication? How do we also increase competency in current models of pedagogy for faith formation?
13
Increased competency in teaching the Bible to all ages through our Lutheran Lens and Confessional Understanding
14
Shared Worship Leadership that expresses engagement with the living God and that our leaders are not afraid to speak about Jesus
15
Competency in Liturgical styles and music to increase participation of those who gather in offering themselves in worship to our living God
16
3. ENTREPRENEURIAL IMAGINATION Building Community Partnerships Creating Alternative Revenue streams (OASIS-UK) Asset-Management Multi-use campuses integrated within the mission Mission Dreaming and Planning is the norm
17
HOW TO BUILD AN ORGANIZATION THAT ENDURES? Martin Reeves-TED@BCG Paris May 2016 “How to build a business that lasts 100 years?”
18
SIX CHARACTERISTICS OF BIOLOGICAL IMMUNITY Redundancy-copies of components Diversity-different approaches and different people Modularity-if one system fails another steps in
19
Adaptation-develops antibodies to the threats Prudence-detecting and reacting to current threats while remembering previous threats Embeddedness-works in harmony with the whole
20
In order for an business/organization/church to last/survive/endure/thrive we need to think differently and shift from mechanical/technical solutions to biological/adaptive responses. We have to shift from wanting to control to seeking to shape the context in which we exist and that is changing at a rapid pace.
21
How does this talk speak to ways in which we might apply the insights into our local context?
