A. Identify why having a school CPR-AED program is crucial to improve survival rates for out of hospital cardiac arrest events B. Identify programs like Project ADAM (Automated Defibrillators in Adam’s Memory) that can be a national resource for school CPR- AED programs Learning Objectives
5
A 5 th grader is sitting in her classroom. She grabs her chest and then collapses. Her teacher goes to her, feels no pulses, and starts CPR. The teacher has someone activate their emergency plan and an AED arrives from within the school. At a school in Wisconsin
6
The AED advises a shock, CPR pauses, the AED shock restores a pulse. EMS arrives and she receives two additional shocks. She is transferred to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in relatively stable condition. She is diagnosed with a cardiac condition, discharged home in a week, and has a normal neurological recovery. At a school in Wisconsin
7
The US population between 12-25 years-old is ~60 million people Sudden death (SD) incidence is estimated to be 0.5 deaths per 100,000 person-years SD is attributed to cardiac causes in 70% of cases (ie- SCD) Ten percent of SD cases are due to noncardiac causes (seizures, pulmonary embolism, asthma, etc) and 20% are considered unexplained Why we need CPR-AED programs
8
CPR & AED use in >2,000 schools over a 2-year period revealed: –1 cardiac arrest per 36 schools –Athletic events were sites for 66% of cases –SCA victim were either students (44%) or adults (56%) –AED was applied in 85% of cases with a shock delivered in 66% of cases –71% survived to hospital discharge Drezner 2013: Outcomes from sudden cardiac arrest in US high schools: a 2-year prospective study from the National Registry for AED Use in Sports
9
Other findings: –Most frequent responders were administrative staff, trainers/coaches, visitors, school nurses, and teachers Survival rates improved by: –School AED (80%) vs EMS AED (50%) –School with emergency action plan (79%) vs schools without plan (44%) Why we need CPR-AED programs Drezner 2013: Outcomes from sudden cardiac arrest in US high schools: a 2-year prospective study from the National Registry for AED Use in Sports
