Section 1.3 Body Cavities and Membranes Objectives: 1. List the cavities of the body and state their locations. 2. Name the organs located in each of the body cavities. 3. Name the membranes that line each body cavity and adhere to the organs.
2
Body Cavities and Membranes Posterior (Dorsal) Cavity 1. Cavity subdivided into the cranial cavity and the vertebral cavity. 2. Cranial cavity houses the brain. 3. Vertebral cavity runs through the vertebral column and encloses the spinal cord
3
Posterior Body Cavity Membranes Lined by three (3) membranous layers called the meninges. 1.Inner- tightly covers the brain and spinal cord 2.The space between the middle layer and inner layer is filled with cerebrospinal fluid.
4
Anterior (Ventral) Body Cavity 1. Divided into 2 regions called the Thoracic Cavity and the Abdominopelvic Cavity (which is further divided into the abdominal cavity and the pelvic cavity) 2. Separated by the diaphragm 3. Lined with serous membranes
