1 Recap: Can you ….? Convert 230 m to km? Convert 75 cl to litres? Convert 6 gallons to pints? Convert 7 inches to cm? Convert 30m/sec to m/hour? Give the limits of accuracy of 1.85m? Give the distance travelled on a journey lasting 4 ½ hours at an average speed of 50 miles per hour?

Introduction to Algebra Matching Cards Task: How much do you know? Creating substitution Tables Formulate algebraic expressions

3 What is Algebra? Algebra is the use of letters or variables to represent unknown quantities.

4 Some Definitions -2x3-2x3 Coefficient: The number part of the term. A variable on its own has a coefficient of 1. ( x = 1 x ) Variable: The unknown letter part of the term. Power or Exponent: The number of times x is multiplied by itself. Sign: The sign in front of the coefficient belongs to the term.

5 Algebraic Expressions An algebraic expression is simply an answer containing letters and numbers. The number of terms in an algebraic expression can be determined by looking at the + and – signs. Terms are separated by + and – signs. 2 x 2 + 3y (2 terms) 4ab 2 – 3a 2 + 2b 2 (3 terms)

6 Working in pairs complete the following task: Match the algebraic expressions (cards labelled E1 – E12) with the word explanations (W1 – W10).

7 You will now be given another set of cards containing tables of values. (T1 – T8) Match these to your previous pairs. Note that some tables may match more than one expression. Fill in the missing values on the tables.

8 You will now be given a last set of cards with the area of shapes represented (A1 – A8) Match the area of the shapes to their expression. Once you have completed this, fill in the table with your answers and stick your results onto a poster.

9 A number multiplied by 3, then 4 added to it. Add 4 to a number, then multiply your answer by 3. Using your whiteboards, write down an expression that means: 3n + 4 (n + 4) x 3 = 3(n + 4)

10 Add 2 to a number, then divide the answer by 4. n + 2 4 Divide a number by 4, then add 2. n + 2 4

11 Multiply a number by itself, then multiply the answer by 6. Multiply a number by 6, then square your answer. (n x n) x 6 = n 2 x 6 =6n 2 (n x 6) 2 = (6n) 2

12 A number multiplied by itself, add 5 multiplied by itself A number add 5 then multiply the answer by itself A number add 5 multiplied by itself (n x n) + (5 x 5) = n 2 + 5 2 (n + 5) 2 n + (5 x 5) n + 5 2

13 3n + 4 3(n + 4) n1234 3n + 4 n1234 3(n + 4) Use substitution to complete the table of values. (Remember BODMAS)

14 n + 2 4 n + 2 4 n1246 n + 2 4 n1246 n + 2 4

15 6n 2 (6n) 2 n1234 6n 2 n1234 (6n) 2
