3. 3 What is Algebra? Algebra is the use of letters or variables to represent unknown quantities.

4. 4 Some Definitions -2x3-2x3 Coefficient: The number part of the term. A variable on its own has a coefficient of 1. ( x = 1 x ) Variable: The unknown letter part of the term. Power or Exponent: The number of times x is multiplied by itself. Sign: The sign in front of the coefficient belongs to the term.

5. 5 Algebraic Expressions An algebraic expression is simply an answer containing letters and numbers. The number of terms in an algebraic expression can be determined by looking at the + and – signs. Terms are separated by + and – signs. 2 x 2 + 3y (2 terms) 4ab 2 – 3a 2 + 2b 2 (3 terms)
