Jamestown, Powhatan Peoples Constant plundering and warfare between settlers/natives Cultural divide on idea of land ownership led to violence Peace from 1614-1618, marriage of Pocahontas and Rolfe She dies, and warfare continues from 1622 and 1645 Warfare & disease eliminate 90% of Native population within 60 years of English settlement (1667)

House of Burgesses Since Magna Carta, people of Eng. think power of rulers must be controlled 1 st Legislative Assembly in the colonies Also called Representative Democracy Est. 1619, modeled after Eng. Parliament King James I tried to dissolve the assembly HOB set precedent: Each new English colony demanded a local legislature
