European Funds Reaching the objective by funding projects in two ways: o Directly managed funds o Indirectly managed funds Grants vs Loans o Grant is a sum of money given by a government or other organization for a particular purpose o Loan is a sum of money that is expected to be paid back with interest How?

Horizon 2020 What is: Programme for the EU Innovation, Research and Development Objective: keeping the EU research at an excellent level Type of fund: Grant (70% - 100%) Budget: 77 billions euro Sectors: new technologies frontiers and product innovation Scope: increase the competitiveness of the research and entrepreneurship in the EU Beneficiaries: companies, organisations, public bodies Partnerships: usually mandatory (it depends from the subprogramme) Definition

Eurostars SMEs with a headcount of 100 FTE employees or fewer must: o have at least 5.0 FTEs dedicated to R&D activities o or dedicate at least 10.00% of their FTE to R&D activities o or dedicate at least 10.00% of their turnover to R&D activities SMEs with a headcount of more than 100 FTE employees: o have at least 10.0 FTEs dedicated to R&D activities o or dedicate at least 10.00% of their FTE to R&D activities o or dedicate at least 10.00% of their turnover to R&D activities R&D performing SME

Conclusions European Commission funds companies with a sustainable balance of sheet o Startups can have troubles to be funded Timing o SME Instrument funding process is long and has a low success rate.
