Flashback a reference to the past; gives information about the events that already happened in relation to the story

Symbolism Symbol: something (an animal, object, character, setting, etc.) that stands for or represents something else within a literary work Symbolism: using a symbol effectively in a literary work to display several meanings

Tone the author’s attitude towards his/her audience and the subject matter; the author’s general attitude towards the world

First Person Narrator the story is told by one of the characters in the story; this narrator uses pronouns like “I”, “me”, “we”, etc.

Third Person Narrator the story is told by an outsider who is not directly involved in the story (they are not a character in the story)

Omniscient A type of third person narrator the narrator knows the thoughts, feelings, words, and actions of ALL the characters in the story

Limited Omniscient A type of third person narrator the narrator knows the thoughts, feelings, words, and actions of only ONE character in the story
