2 Statistics to Ponder ● United States: 89 Guns Per 100 People- highest in the world ● Finland 45 Guns Per 100 People ● U.S. 3.2 Gun Murders per 100 000 people ● Australia 0.1 per 100 000 ● Switzerland 2.3 million guns- population 8 million

3 Dunblane, Scotland ● Thomas Hamilton, 43 killed 16 kindegarten aged children, + teacher w/ 4 guns he legally owned ● Calls for a gun ban resulted in 750 000 signatures ● Next year ban became law

4 Tasmania Killer (Australia) 1996 ● Martin Bryant went on a killing spree, 35 people dead ● Within 12 days federal + state govt imposed strict gun laws, including a ban on semi- automatic rifles ● Gun ownership restricted to those with genuine need like sport club /gun rangemembership, ● 700 000 guns bought back and destroyed ● No mass shootings in the last 16 year

5 Switzerland- Frederich Leibacher ● Leibacher went on rampage in local parliament killing 14 people ● Also high # of gun suicides ● Referendum proposed military issued firearms locked away in army depts/ ban on sale of pump action rifles/automatic weapons ● Was rejected ● In Switzerland there is citizen militia allowed to keep weapons at home ● Ammunition is locked away at military depots

6 Anders Breivik-Norway ● Killed 69 people in July 2011 with a pistol and rifle acquired legally by joining sport club and taking hunting course ● Norway has strict gun control laws

7 Marc Lepine and Canada ● Canada: Montreal Massacre- Marc Lepine kills 14 at Ecole Polytechnique ● Led to “Take Back the Night”, calls for gun control ● Worst mass shooting in Canadian history

8 USA: Mass Shootings Since Columbine (1999) April 1999- 14 dead at Columbine ● July 1999- 12 dead in Atlanta, Ga, including man's wife + two children ● Sept 1999- 6 people dead after prayer service in Fort Worth, Texas ● October 2002- DC Beltway Sniper- 10 dead ● August 2003- Six killed in Chicago ● Nov 2004- Hunter kills 6 and wounds 2 others after an argument ● March 2005- 7 people dead in Wisconsin at church service
