6
Children need to be able to read the single letter graphemes that make up most of set 1 sounds at speed and be able to blend the sounds to make words.
7
Two key principles of Read Write Inc are Participation & Partnerwork This is because we learn; 10% of what we read 20% of what we hear 30% of what we see 50% of what we both see and hear 70% of what is discussed with others 85% of what we experience personally 95% of what we teach to someone else
8
A set 1 speed sounds lesson.
9
The ‘a’ lesson. Purpose of the lesson. Hear and Say the sound. Read the sound. Write the sound. Fred Talk.
10
Fred Fingers
11
Children then move on to learning sounds that are made up of 2 letters, for example ‘ch.’ http://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/resources/parent-tutorial-teaching-two- letters-one-sound/
12
A set 2 speed sounds lesson.
13
Set 3 Sounds.
14
Story Book Activity We introduce the story, emphasising the vocabulary. The children read the story at least 3 times. 1 Decode the words. 2 Ensure full comprehension. 3 Discuss the story in greater depth.
15
Writing The children have already learnt how to write the letters and words during Set 1 lessons. They can now move on to the ‘Writing Activities’.
16
Terminology. Fred Talk – say the sounds out loud. Fred in Your Head – say the sounds in your head. Speed Read – read the word without sounding out. Green Words – words made up of graphemes that children have been taught. Children use Fred Talk to read and Fred Fingers to spell these words. Red Words – common words with an uncommon spelling.
