Slave’s are kidnapped from their homes in Africa, and went through months of sea travel When they entered the United States, all freedoms were gone and put in slave auctions where they would be judged physically and mentally in front of many people. Slaves were sold apart from their families Along with working many hard hours, slaves dealt with starvation, abuse, and daily beatings Reading and Writing for slaves was outlawed, and free time was restricted Katie’s Slide

Abolition is the movement to end slavery in the United States The North wanted slavery in the South to end The South wanted to keep practicing slavery Carly’s Slide

Frederick Douglass was a freed slave He was a strong speaker for the Abolition Movement Was one of the few slaves that could read or write The reason he felt so strongly about abolition is because he was treated so badly when he was a slave, including daily beatings and starvation Skylar’s Slide

Slaves who had been freed and where living in the north tried their very hardest to spread Abolition in the south Freed slaves in the north formed Pro- Abolition groups that promoted Abolition Even some white men donated money and put ads in the newspaper to help the Abolition movement Many enslaved blacks would rebel by breaking tools, ignored their masters, didn’t work as fast as normal, and used violence Courtney’s Slide

The Underground Railroad was a passage way for runaway slaves to get to freedom in the north There were people along the railroad to help them to stay out of sight from there masters The slaves would go to the railroad helpers and stay in the special hiding spots that they made just for the slaves They would travel through the water to get the dogs that were chasing them off course To help the slaves find there way to freedom they would follow the North Star Carly’s Slide

Usually if a slave was caught escaping, they would be put to death or would be severely punished If a master found their escaped slave in the North they were allowed to take hold of the slave and bring them back to the south to work Katie’s Slide

Harriet Tubman was an escaped slave who devoted most of her life to escorting slaves to escape to the north from the south Over 10 years as one of the “Conductors” of the Underground Railroad, she made a total of nineteen trips to the south back to the north with escaped slaves She was famous for never losing a passenger on her routes At one point, a $40,000 reward was offered for Harriet’s escape Courtney’s Slide

She was a preacher who traveled around trying to end slavery Other than her preaching on the movement to end slavery she also talked about women's suffrage Skylar’s Slide
