Two Types of Teaching Appointments Teaching Assistant (TA) A full-time graduate student who assists an instructor in the teaching of a course. Teaching Fellow (TF) A full-time graduate student who has obtained a master’s degree in his or her area of teaching specialty or has equivalent qualifications; TFs teach courses. Both types of appointments are administratively processed in the same manner.

Unique Relationship of TAs and Students As students themselves, TAs identify with their students and can be strong motivators TAs are often less intimidating than professors TAs often have more direct contact with undergraduate students than do professors

TA and TF Responsibilities (may vary) Assist professors and students Attend all classes Lead discussion groups Grade papers and exams Take attendance Prepare a syllabus and teach a course (TFs) Hold office hours (very important)

Setting up electronic classrooms and laboratories Preparation of instructional aids and web pages Preparation of exams Conducting review sections Leading discussion or lab sections Offering to give guest lectures (TAs) ASK YOUR PROFESSOR WHAT IS EXPECTED OF YOU! TA and TF Responsibilities (continued) Being a TA or TF is a collaborative effort among the graduate fellow or assistant, the supervising professor, and the students in the class.

Grading and Personal Integrity TAs are looked upon as individuals with authority; therefore it is important to not have favorites or to develop personal relationships with members of your class Grade all students using the same standards Treat all students with the same degree of courtesy and respect To be the most effective TA, you must treat all students equally in regards to both personal interaction and grading.

Academic Dishonesty Sanctions –Undergraduate-Failing the course. Lesser sanction is some cases. –Graduate of University-revocation of degree Process –Faculty confers with student –Faculty may investigate the facts –Record of disposition and facts –Deans make decisions
