Bullying is… any mean behavior that you do on purpose to hurt someone, to cause physical or emotional harm. The behavior must be unwanted, severe or happens repeatedly.

H. Priebe-Diaz, Human Relations, Diversity & Equity Verbal Bullying May include: Name-calling Teasing Gossiping Making threats Making rude noises Spreading rumors

Nonverbal Bullying May include: Posturing Making gang signs Mad-doggin’/ Staring Following someone/ Stalking Destroying property Graffiti or graphic images Inappropriate and/or threatening gestures

Physical Bullying May include: Hitting Punching Pushing Shoving Poking Kicking Tripping Strangling Hair pulling Fighting

Social Bullying May include: Leaving someone out Rejecting Intimidating Humiliating Manipulating friendships Isolating Rating or ranking

H. Priebe-Diaz, Human Relations, Diversity & Equity Hazing Is any type of initiation or “perceived” tradition associated with actual or desired membership in a student organization or group, whether or not the group is officially recognized by the school district.

Hate-Motivated Incident/Crime Bul-2047.0 An act or attempted act which constitutes an expression of hostility against a person, property, or institution because of the target’s real or perceived race, color, national origin, religion, disability, sex, sexual orientation, or gender-identity.

Effects of Bullying Target Depression Anxiety / Fear Lower self-esteem Absenteeism / Truancy Decrease in academic success Substance abuse Retaliation / Use of violence Suicide / Suicidal thoughts

Why Don’t Bystanders Intervene? They think: “It’s none of my business.” fear getting hurt or becoming another victim. feel powerless to stop the bully. don’t like the victim or believe the victim “deserves” it. don’t want to draw attention to themselves. fear retribution. think that telling adults won’t help or it may make things worse. don’t know what to do.

Effects of Bullying on Bystanders Pressure to participate in the bullying Anxiety about speaking to anyone about the bullying Powerlessness to stop bullying Vulnerability to becoming victimized Fear of associating with the victim, the bully, or the bully’s pals Guilt for not having defended the victim

Effects on Students Who Bully More likely to commit at least one major crime and go to jail by adulthood. More likely to abuse substances Decrease in academic success More likely to experience issues of depression and anxiety.

If you are Bullied… Tell the person to “Stop!” Get help immediately. Always tell your parents, teacher, counselor, or principal. It is not tattling or snitching. Do not fight back physically. Be proud of who you are. Tell the person how you feel. “I feel ___, when you __________.

If you are Bullied… Be strong. Do not show anger or fear. Keep safe. Avoid situations and people where bullying happens. Get involved. Join clubs, organizations, student groups. Start a club or an anti-bullying campaign to promote peace and tolerance.

If you are Cyberbullied… Do NOT respond to the message. Tell your parent or another trusted adult. “Block” and ”Report Abuse” directly with the service provider.

If you are Cyberbullied… Ask the school for help. Call police if you are being threatened. Never share your personal information or give your password to friends or strangers.
