Statistics StopBullying.gov 70.6% have seen bullying When bystanders intervene, bullying stops within 10 seconds 57% of the time Most bullying takes place in school, on the play ground, and on the bus Only 20 – 30% reported bullying Between 1 in 4 and 1 in 3 students in the US report that they have been bullied in school Most bullying happens in middle school. Most common types: verbal and social 28% of students in grades 6 – 12 experienced bullying

What is bullying? When someone hurts or scares another person on purpose. It happens more than once. It is more than just something someone did that bothers me.

Appropriate ways to handle bullies: Tell the bully to stop using “I” messages. o Please stop “I” don’t like it when you bully me. Tell an adult. Have confidence in yourself. Help the person being bullied. Surprise the bully. o Say “thank you and walk away.” Avoid the bully. Make friends Don’t let the bully get the upper hand!
