High Voltage Transmission Lines Fall River Electric has considerable investment in the Caldera. Parallel Transmission lines run the full length of Island Park. The Bonneville Power Administration maintains the 115 kV line providing power from Drummond Substation east of Ashton, ID north to Mack’s Inn Substation near West Yellowstone, Montana. The transmission lines are primarily owned by Fall River except for a section of 115 kV line from Macks Inn to the Madison Substation near West Yellowstone which is owned by BPA. These transmission facilities are critical transmission lines feeding Island Park and the northern end of our system. The 46 kV line is solely owned and maintained by Fall River, extending past West Yellowstone to the Hebgan Lake region in Montana.

Substations and Distribution Lines Fall River Electric owns and maintains eight substations and jointly owns the Mack’s Inn Substation with BPA. There are 335 miles of overhead and underground distribution line running through the Caldera. Many of the transmission lines, substations, and distribution feeders, reside on the United States Forest Service land requiring special use permits for F.R. Right-of-Way access. The ability to maintain easements and conduct day-to-day operations on our northern service territory depends on communication with local USFS personnel, it is critical to have a local contact, especially in an emergency situation.

Fiber Optic Cable **Yellow Line Fall River owns approximately 65 miles of Fiber Optic Cable in the Northern end of the service territory.

Forest Service Easements and Permits When Fall River needs to construct new lines, add to existing facilities, build new infrastructure, or maintain existing plant, it is first necessary to obtain a special use permit or work within a special use permit from the USFS. Typically we meet to establish a plan. Fall River will be informed of the steps necessary- including NEPA, Archeological Studies, and sensitive or threatened plant studies. Cooperation and planning are critical here as some of these studies and permitting can take an extended period or may be as easy as updating existing agreements. Fall River works closely with local forest service personnel to make sure that all expectations are met.
