Classifying Reactions Chapter 7
2
When you burn a candle, a chemical reaction called combustion takes place. CHEMISTRY & YOU What happens to the wax when you burn a candle? Copyright © Pearson Education, Inc., or its affiliates. All Rights Reserved.

What are the five general types of reactions? 1.Synthesis (or combination) 2.Decomposition 3.Singe-replacement 4.Double-replacement 5.Combustion Classifying Reactions Copyright © Pearson Education, Inc., or its affiliates. All Rights Reserved.
4
1. Synthesis Reactions (Combination) Two (or more) reactants combine to form one product general form: A + B AB specific types: a)2 elementsFe + S FeS b)2 compoundsCaO + H 2 O Ca(OH) 2 c)1 element, 1 compound2SO 2 + O 2 2SO 3
5
2. Decomposition Reactions one reactant breaks down into two or more products general form: AB A + B Examples: 2Na 3 N 6Na + N 2 CaCO 3 CaO + CO 2 *decomposition reactions require energy 1) heat 2) electricity 3) catalyst
6
3. Single-Replacement A single-replacement reaction is one in which one element replaces a second element in a compound general form: A o + B + C - B o + A + C - Example: Zn + Cu(NO 3 ) 2 Cu + Zn(NO 3 ) 2 **Refer to activity series B + C - + D o B + D - + C o Example: 2NaCl + Br 2 Video - Flinstones

4. Double-Replacement general form: A + B - + C + D - A + D - + C + B - a. Neutralization Ca(OH) 2 + 2HCl CaCl 2 + 2H 2 O base + acid yields salt + water b. Precipitate – solid forms that is insoluble AgNO 3 + KCl

Combustion Rxns -a reactant (hydrocarbon) and oxygen, O 2 react and release energy, heat, and/or light, and products formed are CO 2 and H 2 O Ex: CH 4 + 2 O 2 CO 2 + 2 H 2 O

DO NOW 1)Hydrofluoric acid + zinc zinc fluoride + hydrogen 2) Phosphoric acid + calcium hydroxide calcium phosphate + water A)Classify type of reaction B)Write formulas and Balance C)Don’t forget Diatomics!!
